I think we tend to be hard on ourselves and overthink wearing the same thing all the time. But honestly, I think sticking to a formula is how you really fine-tune your personal style. When you have a signature look, you also create a bit of your own brand. People will remember it about you too.
There are truly several great benefits of a signature outfit. And once you figure those out, you’ll want to keep them in your back pocket. Lately, this has been mine and it can vary from day to day. But that’s just how they work. It’s a bit of a guide to putting your outfits together and here’s why I love doing this.
The Benefits Of A Signature Outfit Formula
Simplify Getting Dressed
I truly believe that having too much in your closet makes getting dressed very hard. It’s one of the reasons why I loved doing Kon Mari. It simplified my closet and helped to keep my personal style in check.
Getting dressed will be simplified when you have a few outfit formulas you can lean on. You won’t stare at your closet and wonder what to wear. Instead, you’ll just wonder what pieces of the formula you want to pull out which is so much easier! And that’s one of the best benefits of a signature outfit.
Have A Clear Head When Shopping
Having a clear head when shopping really makes adding to your closet a breeze. You won’t be wasting money on things you won’t wear when you keep your outfit formulas in check.
Plus, something that you can do to really stay on track is to make a list of things you need or want to add to your rotation. I started doing this more recently and it has really helped me from impulse shopping and adding things to my closet that don’t help to support my outfit formulas.

Fewer Decisions To Make
There is nothing more annoying than trying to make all the decisions all the time. And if there’s one less decision I can spend my time and energy on, I’ll do it. And having outfit formulas to rely on will help make getting dressed in the morning a breeze as you don’t need to spend time making decisions!
Ability To Invest In Better Pieces
When you have a look down, you can then rationalize investing in better quality and higher price pieces. If you know you really love to wear great denim, you will be able to justify investing in higher-quality items that will last you for years to come.
Maybe you realize that your outfit formula always includes a great pair of knee high boots. Instead of buying cheap ones that don’t last and really don’t make you super happy, you can finally justify investing in the splurge worthy pair. The cost per wear will be worth it when you can confidently buy something that’s part of your outfit formulas.
This is something I have been doing a lot more of recently. I know that I’m a big fan of the straight leg jeans and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Adding more options to my closet gives me more variety while allowing me to make more looks with the things I already own.
And same for loafers. I fell in love with the chunky loafer trend last year thanks to these. So this fall, I invested in another couple options to really get more looks out of them.
Less Waste
And the bottom line is, if you stick to a bit of a uniform, there’s less wasteful spending. And also less wasteful since you aren’t donating items that you get sick of quickly. Which means, less stuff in landfills.
How To Create A Signature Style
Finding and curating your personal style can take some time. Trial and error, and really practicing getting dressed to fine-tune it all. You can read all about how to create your own style in my detailed post here.
The great thing about coming up with your own style and having your outfit formulas, is that you can then tailor it to seasons and occasions. For me, I love jeans and a tee. So summer becomes great denim cut offs and a tee or tank. And for winter, swap with a sweater and boots.
