Fall is simply the best season when it comes to fashion. And I think there are two things I personally love the most when it comes to fall fashion. It’s the jackets and the shoes. They transform jeans and a tee (my uniform) to a whole new level. And that’s why I think these are the superheroes of fall fashion. Fall jackets can totally transform and elevate your look. You hear me harp a lot on always having a third piece to make your outfits feel more put-together and elevated. And a jacket IS the third piece. Plus, these pieces help to keep you warm during the fall season with the ever-changing fall weather.
This means you may need a few styles of jackets to have on hand to grab to complete your outfits depending on your vibe for the day and what the weatherman is reporting that morning. And you may want to keep your fleece jacket North Face in the closet. We are reaching for fashion-forward pieces (even classics like a trench) to make our outfits feel elevated. Even our leggings. Period. Here are my top picks for some of the best fall outerwear to have in your closet this season.
25 Best Fall Outerwear
Classic Camel Trench Coat
A total classic, and one that you can wear with the majority of your closet. This season, I’m choosing longer lengths that feel more on trend that the shorter ones we used to wear. Also try to shop for one that’s water resistant if you can!
Faux Leather Trench
If you really want to up your trench game, try a faux leather option. This one from MANGO is a great price. Also love this brown leather one.
Sherpa Lined Faux Leather Moto Jacket
A perfect mix of a moto jacket, meets sherpa. Embracing a few trends here in one great jacket. I love this one so much and it’s been added to my closet!
ASOS Long Wool Dad Coat
Wear this over mini dresses, or with jeans and a cute loafer. This will be one you find yourself grabbing often. I also really love this chocolate color and find myself leaning more into earth tones over black for fall.
Sezane Scott Trench Coat
I have this in my closet for fall and I’m really in love with it. The color, the fabric, the fit. It’s really great. It also comes in navy which is simply stunning and classic camel.
Utility Jacket
A really good light layer for fall is a utility jacket. I like to pair mine with black straight leg jeans. And if you want to feel a bit more updated, go for a slightly oversized fit.
Free People Quilted Bomber Jacket
Quilted jackets are a popular trend for fall. Free People has one that they’ve brought back for a few years now and is a best seller. Comes in a few colors too. Great for casual outfits.
Alex Mill Chore Coat
A chore coat is a classic silhouette and one that is a personal favorite. You can find this style at a lot of retailers but I’m loving this one from Alex Mill. It comes in 6 colors and is made of recycled cotton. Wear as your light layer when the weather starts to turn.
Sezane Henri Coat
A really fun and unique piece for your fall wardrobe. This Sezane coat is perfect left open and draped, or with a big chunky belt. Loving the print and texture for this coat. A true statement piece!
MANGO Shearling Leather Coat
Shearling and leather are meant to be together this fall. While I have been staying away from this length, it somehow just works. Maybe it’s the fit, or the mixing of fabrics, but I think this is a fun outerwear piece for fall!
Sezane Paulin Coat
Quite possibly the most perfect plaid shacket I’ve ever found. It comes in a few solid colors too like off white and navy. But I love this tan and cream buffalo plaid for fall. Check out my Sezane sizing guide here.
Avec Les Filles Leather Trench
Very into this color (also comes in a beautiful green faux leather). The length of this is absolute perfection. Dress this up or down with heels or a sneaker, it’s so versatile.
Everlane ReNew Quilted Long Line Jacket
I’m a big fan of the Everlane ReNew collection (read my full review here) and this is their newest style. More quilted jackets! And I really love the longer line of this as it makes it feel a bit more elevated than the shorter ones.
Oversized Knit Coat
Do we call this a coatigan? I love this instead of all the thin cardigans we used to wear. This is a nice update to the classic and comes in three colors.
Madewell Denim Trucker Jacket
A relaxed fit trucker jacket has 100% replaced our more fitted and shrunken denim jackets of years past. For the Millennial update, it’s all about the oversized fit. I have this one and love it!
AllSaints Dalby Leather Jacket
My closet would not be complete without a basic black leather moto jacket. It’s probably the most money I have ever spent on a jacket but it gets the most use. See more options to shop here from vegan to under $100 favorites.
Abercrombie Blazer Coat
Not a blazer, not quite a winter coat. Just perfect though. I wore this in New York City last fall here and it was really the perfect weight and completed so many looks of mine. Comes in several colors and prints.
MANGO Leather Overshirt
Overshirts, or shackets, whatever you want to call them, are a key fall staple. A faux leather one is a fun update from all the flannel and plaid we typically see in this silhouette.
Boden Waterproof Raincoat
Depending on where you live, you may want to invest in. good waterproof raincoat with a hood. I swear by having at least some sort of waterproof raincoat (even if it’s a $40 rain jacket like this) just to have in emergencies. But this one from Boden is a nice heavier quality and great if you’ll get more use out of it.
Faux Fur Jacket
I have a hunter green faux fur jacket that I thought was a crazy purchase, but I actually have worn it more than I thought. They really are a fun topper even to basic outfits. But are also a perfect choice for those nicer outfits and events you may need to attend this fall.
Classic Long Black Trench
Love the length and slightly oversized fit of this long black trench. Depending on your personal style, you may want to try a black trench instead of the more classic camel (which this does come in!)
Puffer Jacket
For a trendy take on the puffer coat, this shiny version is super cute. Love it for an athleisure look or something casual like joggers or jeans and sneakers.
Non Black Leather Jacket
If you already have a black leather jacket in your closet (or you’re not into the color at all) try another color! So many options now in super affordable price points. This one comes in a dozen colors.
Plaid Midi Coat
A classic that you can take into winter too. A plaid midi coat with oversized lapels like this one feels very fresh and updated than just a boring overcoat.
House of Harlow Faux Fur Leopard Coat
Leopard isn’t going anywhere. I would definitely opt for one that looks realistic and in a fit that’s more on trend like this long overcoat. Love it paired with denim.
