Recently I styled this grey t-shirt swing dress two very simple ways for fall. Grabbing my two favorite jackets, denim and leather, to switch them up. I’ll be honest, it’s what I always default to. Those jackets get SO much use in my closet that I wanted to share a few more ways to style a simple t-shirt dress but with a few more fall-appropriate light layers. I’m taking this simple black t-shirt dress out for a spin.
Two Ways To Style A Black T-Shirt Dress For Fall
Whether you’re styling a slinky slip dress or a more casual t-shirt dress, here are two easy ways to style it. Both outfit ideas are great for fall, and honestly for spring too when the weather starts to warm up a bit. And this is especially great to wear when it’s just too hot out in the fall. Something that happens often here in the south!
I really love easy effortless and simple outfits that don’t feel like you’ve fussed over them a ton. And a t-shirt dress really does just that. I tend to wear tons of denim, but really, throwing on a dress is so much easier sometimes! Easily switch up the shoes and topper with your dress to create lots of different looks. From super simple and casual, to something a tad more dressy. These are just two easy ideas but you can totally run with them and create your very own variations.
How To Casually Style A Black T-Shirt Dress For Fall
Let’s start by leaning into the fact that this truly is a casual dress, right? For a more casual take on this look, just add a utility jacket and converse. You can go with any good casual jacket you like too. I paired this with my camo utility jacket that’s a bit oversized. Another good option would just be an oversized flannel button down left open. And for my shoes, my platform Converse are always a favorite. I’d also do this with my olive green utility jacket (this one is great and goes with so much). And for sneakers, throw on any of your favorites go to sneakers. This would also be cute with these olive Veja’s that I love for a more monochromatic olive look.
I’d wear this look for a casual lunch with friends that feels put together. Or just out to run errands on the weekend. I think we tend to get in our own way of putting on clothes that are just convenient like leggings. But this casual shirt dress styled simply feels effortless and pulled together.

How To Dress Up A Black T-Shirt Dress For Fall
Now for a little more of a dressier look, you have to swap the casual jacket and sneakers for a few new things. Whenever I want to feel instantly more dressed up, add a blazer. This long blazer has been a fall favorite of mine for several years now. It’s definitely one of my most worn pieces in my closet. By choosing this more oversized longer fit instead of a classic 9-5 office blazer, it instantly adds a bit of edge to this simple black t-shirt dress but also makes it feel a bit more dressy too.
For shoes, you have a few options. You can totally go super dressy and add a pair of heeled ankle booties or even a pump. But I kept things more comfortable and did a suede Chelsea boot. This still feels dressy enough to wear out to dinner, or even on a date for drinks. But still cool and casual enough for every day.
A few other ideas…
A few other ideas to dress up this casual short sleeve t-shirt dress is to add a long trench. I love the mix of a short hemline underneath a super long trench. I’m talking down to your calves kind of trench. I think it’s super cool and edgy and when paired with a sexy ankle bootie, or a cool loafer, will make it feel really cool and different. A few things I wouldn’t pair with a t-shirt dress are ballet flats. I think they’re just a tad too sweet for the casual t-shirt dress. I’d sooner try a loafer instead for a pair of flats that would work best.
