A while back I wrote a really fun post on all the horrific outfits and trends I once wore on this blog. Thanks to documenting my fashion for the last decade, you bet there were some good finds. But while writing that post and trying to find my absolutely most tragic choices, I did notice some looks that I would 100% still wear today. Many of them were true closet staples that just work no matter what. Sure some of them are a tad dated or there’s a classic piece to the outfit, but the rest of the look is a complete mess. However, for the most part, these pieces and looks still hold up today. And would you believe me that some are from as old as 2012?
Closet Pieces That Stood The Test Of Time
This is such a good reminder to invest in classic timeless pieces that you can wear for years to come. After pulling these looks for today’s post, I really was inspired to edit back my closet and lean into more classic items. And I’m definitely keeping these all in mind next time I’m shopping. Sure, trendy fun pieces are great on occasion, but making them your entire wardrobe will make it challenging to have a closet that lasts you a long time and doesn’t end up costing you a ton of money.
Summer Favorites
A few things that I found in my summer archives were floral and striped dresses. Maxis, minis, you name it, they all are pieces I’d still wear today. Sure, the shoe choices may be totally wrong on some of them, but I just loved this floral maxi from the archives (along with those bangs!). And you can’t go wrong with a white button-down and denim shorts for summer. I’ve worn this year after year. This look from summer, and this one is a favorite from last summer are both perfect examples on how this outfit really is a classic and timeless.
The Classic Jackets
This one is a no brainer, but I was honestly surprised how many of these outfits I just loved that included some of my favorite jackets. From leather jackets to classic trenches or utility jackets. They all pretty much come back every single year. And I’m giggling at the rest of these outfits. Because wow, some of this is so bad. But again, the jackets are simply classic! You can’t go wrong with a classic cream trench. Or a denim jacket that fits you well. You’ll find yourself reaching for them for years to come.
Black Tights
I remember as a kid living in Montreal putting on my tights and HATING IT. They were part of my private school uniform, my mom wanted me to wear them to piano recitals and temple, but I just hated them. I despised it. Now as an adult, I think it’s such a classic and chic look. Perfect for winter and wearing with all those dresses and skirts. They’ll always be in style no matter what. I do remember all the printed tights from way back when. They gave me LuLaRoe vibes. But simple classic black? Timeless. You can always count on opaque tights to last you for years to come. And my personal favorite in my tights collection are my fleece-lined ones for super cold weather.
Classic Denim
There’s only some denim that has truly lasted years in my closet. And it’s mostly denim skirts and wide-leg jeans. And most importantly, the wash! Classic wash denim in dark wash or classic indigo with no major distressing or whiskering is key. A denim mini when done right and not too trendy can truly last you forever. I still love this a-line button-front mini skirt and have worn it to death. And you all know I love me some wide leg jeans. I always get asked where my jeans are when I wear these but they are seriously almost a decade old. So so good.
Pointy Pumps
Shoes can be tricky as they can be super trendy. But the ones that I still own (and yes I still own all of these above) are my pointy-toed pumps. They just never go out of style. When you choose shoes that are truly classic in shape, you’ll own them for years. Avoid crazy heels that are trendy, or any major platforms. That will quickly date them. But a truly classic, sleek pump is simply the best.
