I love skincare and am always looking for great new products to try. The number one thing you can do to really amp up your anti-aging (once we’ve got you cleansing and moisturizing) is to add in a retinol. Retinol sounds scary and overwhelming, but it isn’t! I promise. If you’re getting a prescription from your dermatologist, you’ve probably experienced very dry flaky skin, redness and sensitivity. All a common result of using retinol. But there are other options that give you that incredible anti-aging ingredient, without the miserable skin flaking and redness.
Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum Review
Recently I started using Dermalogica’s new anti-aging product, the Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum. It’s been a part of my nighttime routine now and I am really liking it. Especially since I have been slacking in the nighttime anti-aging routine lately. Here’s what to know about the new Dermalgoica Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum.
Key Ingredients
- Retinoid Complex – The Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum has not one, but three retinoids and a booster to help this serum work at different speeds. This allows for a continuous release of anti-aging actives for optimal results. The first thing people ask when it comes to retinol is what percent of retinol is in the product? This product has 3.5% of its retinoid complex.
- Squalane – This ingredient is key for replenishing the skin’s moisture and strengthening the skin barrier. Because of this ingredient, you will likely not notice a super irritating effect from the retinol which can happen (and is totally normal and always eases up in a few weeks).
- Beta-Glucan – Another great ingredient to help hydrate and support skin barrier strength. This also helps to support skin recovery. When using retinol, your skin cells are turning over more quickly resulting in younger, newer skin that can be more sensitive. This helps to promote skin recovery to reduce sensitivity.
The Benefits
With any retinol, one of the main benefits is the reduction in the appearance of wrinkles. It helps to smooth skin texture and the appearance of pores. It’s the ultimate anti-aging ingredient. Whenever anyone asks me how they can up their skin care routine, my first question after making sure they are cleansing and moisturizing, is are you using retinol? This is truly the step that will transform your skin.
How To Use The Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum
The Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum is to be used at night just like any other retinol product. This is not something you want to use in the morning, ever. After you cleanse your skin, you’ll apply a thin even layer of serum to your skin.
Because retinol is turning over skin cells and revealing new skin more quickly than your body naturally does, this means your skin is more sensitive. It is crucial that you use an SPF whenever using retinol. Period. No excuses. While I religiously say you need to ALWAYS be using an SPF, I really mean it if you’re doing any sort of highly active ingredient at night like retinol. Because guess what? If you aren’t protecting that brand-new skin that’s being revealed, you are then causing damage to it and reversing the effects of your anti-aging products.
Currently I am loving the Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50 moisturizer. I apply this in the morning as soon as I get up if I’ve used the retinol at night. I’ll apply again once I do my full skincare routine in the morning. But yes, if you’re just going for a morning walk, or sitting at your desk by your big window before you’ve done your skincare routine, I would still suggest putting on SPF before doing any of this if you’re using retinol.
My Honest Review
I have been using this product for just about two weeks or so. And ironically enough, Dermalogica says you should see results in only two weeks according to their clinical study. This is quite fast compared to other brands.
Before I started using the Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum, I was admittedly not doing a very good job with my skincare at night. There has not been a good anti-aging product in my routine in the evenings for a while. This made me really excited to try it since my skin has been feeling a tad blah lately. My skin texture has also been a bit off over the winter.
In just a couple of days, I definitely noticed that unmistakable feeling of starting retinol again. Yet I was not experiencing any flaking or redness. But you can definitely feel just a touch of sensitivity to your skin which is totally normal and expected. And over time, this lessens as it is truly a process with retinol. If you’re already using retinol, you probably can switch with ease and not have any sensitivity. And the lack of flaking and redness is all thanks to the squalane and beta-glucan to help with that.
The Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum has definitely made my skin feel a bit more smooth after use.
I am not someone who has wrinkles, so I can not speak to that. And no I have not yet dabbled in botox, this is just oily skin at its best. But my pores are very large and while you can not shrink your pores, clean unclogged pores will give the appearance of smaller pores which is always a plus and this product definitely helps with that.
Let’s quickly chat about price point too. Retinol in general is going to be a more expensive ingredient. That’s just how it goes. But something to keep in mind is that you are only using one pump, and it is only a small amount that you need. This bottle will likely last you quite a while. Plus, using retinol will likely mean longer visits between botox if that’s your thing and fewer expensive facials. Because, yes, retinol is THAT good.
