There are several great ways to curl your hair. From curling irons, to flat irons and even wands, there’s several methods to consider. And one of the ways I like to curl my hair, is with my flat iron. But there are not one, but two ways to do this.
You can go classic curl that gives you a more curling iron look, which we’ll cover today. And the second, is the flat iron waves. I love to actually mix both of the techniques when doing my hair to really give it that undone beachy look.
One reason why I love this method is that when I travel, I only need to bring my flat iron. I can then straighten my hair on days I want to. And on day sI want to curl my hair, I can simply use the same tool. I use this method so much that I barely touch my wand or curling irons anymore. Instead, my flat iron is doing all the work these days for the perfect curly look. Here’s how to curl your hair with a flat iron.

How to Curl Hair With Flat Iron
How To Curl Short Hair With A Flat Iron
This method will work on short hair and it’s one of my favorite ways to style my bob haircut. I just find this to be easier to get that undone look by doing a bit of a curl, along with a pull at the end to get those straighter ends. Plus, by mixing the flat iron curl with the flat iron wave, you get the perfect combo with just one tool.
How To Curl Long Hair With A Flat Iron
While I find this method to be more challenging to do on longer hair, it is possible. I think this method works, but if you want really good curls, I’d stick to using a curling iron to achieve the best results. You can see my hair tutorial here on how to get beach waves with are the perfect curl if you ask me.

Step One
I always start any curling technique with hair that’s been blow dried or day two hair. I usually try to blow dry it with a round brush or a Denman brush. No reason to put a ton of effort into a round brush blow out unless you want a lot more volume. Then section off your hair and we’ll start with the bottom half.
Step Two
Take a 1-inch section of hair and clamp your flat iron at the top. Then rotate the flat iron anywhere from 180 to 360 degrees so that the hair is being wrapped around the flat iron. The more you rotate, the tighter the curl will be.
I sometimes like to play around with how much I rotate to give a less uniform look. Even just a 90 degree rotation gives a nice bend and wave, instead of a true curl. This is all just a preference of what look you want.

Step Three
Now that your hair is wrapped around the flat iron pull down so that your hair is being pulled through the flat iron. Before you get to the end of the section, you can then pull the flat iron out and away from the hair that’s clamped a bit so that the hair that’s wrapped around it, becomes unwrapped but is still clamped. Keep clamping, just let the hair unravel around the iron. From there, just pull straight down to then straighten that last inch or so to give it that beachy wave look.
Step Four
Repeat this method throughout your entire head and you can mix up the direction too. Just like you would when doing beach waves with a curling iron or wand, you can do your curls away from your face in the front, and then rotate the direction a bit to create that undone look.

Step Five
I like to finish any curl with a mix of texturizing spray to give my hair a bit of grit. And also with some beach wave spray to give it that separated look as well. Add in some hairspray to set it all.

How To Avoid Creases When Curling Hair With Flat Iron
Tip One
Use a good flat iron that has a bevel edge. This helps to avoid creases. All flat irons now a days should be like this. They may not even list it, but just look at the plates and make sure there aren’t any sharp 90 degree angles.
Tip Two
Don’t use a super hot temperature. Anything under 365 is usually a good rule of thumb to avoid creases. It’s also better for your hair and we don’t really need to go that much higher.
Tip Three
Move quickly! The best way to achieve this look is to move quickly if you can. Don’t let the iron sit too long in one spot especially when you’re first wrapping the hair around before pulling down.
