This year the #BloggersDoTravel gang was hoping to make a trip to Kentucky for the big Derby. It’s on my bucket list to visit for many reasons. One, I’ve never been to Kentucky. Two, a few of my favorite people (and dogs) live in Kentucky. Like Shelby of Glitter and Gingham, Danielle of Lou What Wear, Josh of The Kentucky Gent and Grace of A Southern Drawl. Basically all my favorite southern bitches. So I was hoping that a trip to the Derby would mean getting to see all of these folks faces, but this year it’s just not going to work out. I’m hoping we all make it next year instead and do a little bit of a better job planning. I’ve heard it’s such a fun weekend and full of Mint Juleps and fun hats. Who wouldn’t like that?
So in honor of the big Kentucky Derby coming up this weekend, I’m sharing the classic Mint Julep recipe. There’s nothing fancy here, it’s just the basics. Bourbon, mint, sugar and water. All in a julep cup of course with shaved ice and garnish with a sprig of mint. Sometimes you just don’t need to mess with a good thing.
The Best Mint Julep Recipe
- 2 ounces of bourbon
- 1-2 sugar cubes
- 3-5 Mint leaves, torn
- 3 ounces of water
- Shaved ice (regular ice is just fine, but the real classic way to make this is with shaved ice!)
Add shaved ice to a mint julep cup, they’re the only way to drink this! Okay, they aren’t, but it sure is the RIGHT way!
Then add all of the ingredients to the cup and stir. Top with a fresh sprig of mint.
