It’s officially spring which means it’s time for a big spring clean. There’s something so satisfying by doing a big clean of your entire house, linens and even your closets once the weather starts to change in for spring. Open all the windows, play some music, and dive in. It’s a nice way to welcome a new season and finally bid adieu to winter. Let’s let the sunshine in, say goodbye to winter, and set aside a whole day to do a big deep clean so we can get our homes in tip top shape for the new season.
Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be complicated either. You can plan and strategize to knock out a good amount of cleaning and organizing in an entire day. You just have to make a plan, and maximize your time and you can get through that spring cleaning checklist. Here are my best tips to practical strategies to help you spring clean your home.
How To Spring Clean Your House in a Day
Make It A Day Project
To really maximize your spring cleaning, make this a total day project. Or even a weekend if you want to do a true deep cleaning. Choosing to do this on a random afternoon will result in an incomplete spring cleanup that feels a little less satisfying. Plan it into your schedule and make it happen.
Get In The Mood & Enlist The Family
Now that you’ve got your big cleaning day scheduled, it’s time to get in the mood to clean. Put on your workout clothes, turn on some music, or start a new audiobook and get excited for what the end result will be. Don’t forget to enlist the family to help as well and assign them some cleaning tasks. A team effort always helps!
Save Decluttering For Another Day, Focus On Cleaning
Today is NOT the day for decluttering. I’m a big fan of the Marie Kondo Method, but save this for another day. It’s time consuming and doesn’t result in a clean house, just a tidy house. If you can knock out some decluttering ahead of your big cleaning day, that would be best. It always feels better to finish a day of cleaning knowing you don’t have to also declutter and purge at some point. Try to get this done first especially since we’re heading into a new season so it should be easier to go through clothing, old papers, pantry items and so on.
Organize The Day
Before you get started, come up with a bit of a game plan so you have a loosely scheduled day. We’ll discuss more below. But you won’t want to be stripping your beds at 8 pm. And likewise, you don’t want to vacuum and mop first thing in the morning before you’ve done your dusting. There should be a bit of a plan on how to tackle your spring clean so you’re efficient and maximize your day.
Do The Hard Stuff First
The last thing I want to do after a few hours of cleaning, is to tackle deep cleans that take time and so much energy. Knock the hard stuff out first so the rest just feels easier. This would include deep cleaning your oven and stove, cleaning the inside of the fridge, cleaning out the garage and so on.
Choose A Few Things To Truly Deep Clean
Let’s also get real here. If you have a large home, a garage, outdoor space and lots of toilets to clean, you probably can’t do this all in one day. Choose a few things to truly deep clean whether it’s just the kitchen, or washing all the linens (including those curtains) instead. Then you can make a cleaning checklist for the rest of the week or month to finish up. But at least you knocked out a good amount in your big spring clean day.
Strip The Beds
The first thing I like to do on a big cleaning day is to strip the beds. Get the laundry started immediately before doing anything else so you can keep things moving. This way you finish the day in a freshly made bed with clean sheets. Nothing beats it.
Dust, Vacuum And Mop Last
The last thing you should ever do when cleaning your home is to dust, vacuum and then mop. And always top to bottom. As you go through the spring cleaning of your home, you’ll create dust and dirt on the floors. Don’t waste your energy vacuuming first, and then dusting later when you add more dust to the floor. Once all your major cleaning is done, finish it all off by dusting (from top to bottom of your home so it falls down and you’re not cleaning it twice), then vacuum, sweep, and mop. Then you’re done!
