A denim skirt will always be something we should have in our closet. Sure, the trends come and go with what that denim skirt may look like. From midis, to minis, to a-line, to maxi, the trends are always evolving.
I recently added a black denim midi skirt to my closet and I am surprisingly obsessed with it. While I thought a midi or maxi denim skirt would look matronly, it turns out if you choose a black wash and style it just right, it can be a very cool, edgy and fashion forward piece in your closet.
Here’s how to style a black denim midi skirt for fall and winter.
How To Style A Black Denim Midi Skirt
Choose A Great Black Denim Skirt
You can start the outfit with any black denim skirt really. I think these tips would work with a black denim mini skirt, all the way to a maxi denim skirt. I’m partial to the midi with a big slit right now.
While I used to love a denim mini skirt, the older I get the more I don’t want to wear a super short skirt. Weird how that happens, right? Here are a few other tips on how to style a denim skirt along with my favorite ones to shop.
Add A Cool Boot
Pairing a denim skirt with a cool boot is my favorite thing to do for fall. It instantly makes the skirt feel seasonally appropriate (a sandal and even some sneakers like a Converse will not feel very fall). I love a high heeled bootie to add some length to my legs as a midi can sometimes shorten you.
Try A Leather Sneaker
If you do want to go the sneaker route, try a leather sneaker for fall. I would choose leather over canvas as it is a more fall-appropriate fabric and will make your look feel more fall inspired.
A chunky Nike Dunk, or New Balance 550 would be a very cool option. And of course, the ever so popular Adidas Sambas or Gazelle’s work too! But whatever leather sneaker you like, low top to high top, really can work with a denim skirt.
Tuck Your Shirt In
Whatever shirt you choose, I like this to be tucked in for a polished look. It keeps the outfit from feeling messy. This is a simple trick to make your outfits feel more put-together.
Try a graphic tee, or sweater to finish the look. If you go sweater route, I love a cropped sweater with high waisted items. It hits perfectly at the waistband of your jeans and skirts. A bodysuit is also a great option to keep a fitted look. And I think a cropped cardigan paired over a tank is perfect with this!
Add A Third Piece
My number one style rule is to always add a third piece. This can be a variety of things from a belt, or a jacket. It makes outfits feel intentional and complete.
For this look, I went with a leather belt. And also made sure to have a bag that went with the look. These are tiny details that really make outfits exude your own personal style.
