One of the most beloved items in a young Millennial’s closet was a denim skirt. The style has evolved over time. I recall in middle school loving my denim maxi skirt. And in high school, obsessing over my Abercrombie & Fitch micro mini pleated denim skirts.
The love for a denim skirt hasn’t waned, but the styles have definitely changed and evolved over time. Here’s how to style a denim skirt in multiple ways. From denim mini skirts, to midis and even yes, the denim maxi skirt.
How To Style A Denim Skirt
To get started with styling a denim skirt, you need to start with a great base. There are so many denim skirt options to choose from depending on your style. You can go super short, or midi, and even maxis.
There are tons of options and styles to choose from. Plus, you can go classic blue denim, or white denim, black or any color you really like! The options are endless.

How To Style Denim Mini Skirts
Denim mini skirts are ones we used to thrive in back in our ay. But they are back and you can totally make these work if you’re in your 30s and 40s. Here are a few things to keep in mind.
Don’t Go Super Short
While we used to wear micro minis back in the 90s and 00s, now is not really the time to risk a butt cheek slip. I think a mini skirt can totally work, but make it a length that you feel most comfortable in or you’ll never wear it.
Try An A-Line Fit Or Semi-Fitted
Instead of the skin tight mini skirt, try an a-line fit or one that is semi-fitted. These just flare out a bit and feel a little more updated and modern. I also love an a-line button front denim mini skirt.
Complete The Look
In my book, gone are the days of wearing a denim skirt and a tank. I’d rather see a denim skirt be worn as a really styled piece and not just thrown on like you would a pair of easy denim cut off shorts. Complete the look of a denim mini skirt with a nice top or sweater, and finish with a belt, and a smart shoe choice that’s fashion forward.
This also means adding a third piece like a jacket, blazer, a sweater over the shoulder, or an oversized linen button up worn open, you get the idea.
How To Style Denim Midi Skirts
The denim midi skirt is really having a moment right now for 2023. We’re seeing the true midi length that hits below the knee. What we aren’t seeing a ton of is the pencil skirt denim skirt. Which I was guilty of back in our 2015 era. Here’s what to keep in mind when styling a denim midi skirt.
Go For A Slit
A slit helps to make this feel more fresh, modern and sexy. Instead of feeling like you’re covering up your entire body in denim, this adds a bit of style to the whole look.
Try A Black Or White Skirt
I’m hearing a lot of hesitation when it comes to wearing a longer denim skirt because it can make you feel like you’re trying to be modest or like you’re a Mennonite Amish person. While I beg to differ, if this is something that you’re concerned with, I find a black washed denim or a cream or off white one helps to avoid this feeling.
Style With Boots For Fall & Winter
For fall and winter, add a knee high boot to your denim midi skirt for an ultra chic combination. I think this also helps to keep it from feeling like a modest long skirt and instead makes it feel fresh and edgy. Especially if you do a tall black leather boot.
Keep Proportions In Mind
When wearing a midi legnth, you want to keep your proportions in mind to keep things feeling more balanced. Always tuck in your shirt to create a waist, or pair with a cropped tee or top. Wearing a more fitted top that’s tucked in will help to create that balance easily too.
If going for a blousier top, just make sure it’s tucked in so you can see your waist and not feel like you’re wearing a big shirt and a big long skirt all at the same time.
And if you want to wear a third piece like a jacket or coat, just ensure that it’s cropped to the waist, or super long so it flows with the skirt.
How To Wear A Denim Maxi Skirt
A denim maxi skirt follows a lot of the same tips and style rules as a denim midi. You’ll want to really keep in mind proportions or things will quickly look a mess.
Add Height With Heels
Not required, but if you’re feeling like your denim maxi skirt is taking over you, try adding some height with heeled shoes or boots. This works for any and all seasons too.
For spring and summer, try a heeled sandal or espadrille. And for fall and winter, go for heels or boots. Knee high or ankle even work!
Always Choose A Slit
To me, this just helps to alleviate any heaviness to the look by having a slit. It creates movement and shows a little skin. I think it’s the way to go when styling a denim maxi skirt.
If there’s one new piece of denim to add to your closet this season, let it be a denim skirt. Whether you choose a mini, midi or maxi, this is a trend that is having a big moment! And try not to overthink the styling. You can embrace all the denim and even go head-to-toe Canadian tuxedo style if you want!
And if you feel like denim minis are a thing of the past (Millennial here, and I think it’s 100% to avoid them if you want) I think the denim midi skirt is the perfect addition to your fall wardrobe for 2023. So easy to style and an instant update to choosing your go to denim jeans.
