Some people love a good dress, or maxi skirt. Some love a pencil skirt, while others avoid dresses and skirts entirely. But the thing I love most, is probably a good mini skirt. Specifically on in the fall and winter. I am going to assume my fascination with these is all thanks to a private school uniform I had to wear in Montreal as a kid. While I hated it then, I think it made me nostalgic for them now and they’re simply the best. I find myself never reaching for them in spring and summer (my shorts are what I live in during those warm months), but come fall and winter, I’m all about the mini skirt. And mini dresses!
How To Style A Mini Skirt For Fall And Winter
But there’s something so simple and effortless about mini skirts for this season. They’re so easy to style, come in so many options to choose from, and instantly make you feel like you’re dressed up and on-trend. I didn’t have a ton of mini skirts in my closet as of late. I purged a lot of my Club Monaco ones years ago and I’m not quite sure why. This one was a favorite! Now that I have rediscovered my love for the winter mini, I’m stocking up. They’re super easy to style for fall and well into winter with the addition of fleece lined tights to stay warm. They’re a closet staple, and this is how I like to style them for the seasons.
Best Fall And Winter Mini Skirts To Shop
From simple straight silhouettes like the one I’m wearing today, to pleated minis, and wrap styles, there are truly styles for everyone. Go simple in black or grey, or try a classic print like houndstooth or plaid. And don’t forget about suede and leather.
Best Tops To Wear With Fall Mini Skirts
I like to keep two things in mind when choosing a top to pair with my mini skirts. If the skirt has any volume to it, like big pleats, I try to avoid something too voluminous on top. I’d probably stick to more fitted tees, turtlencks or crew sweaters. But otherwise, You can wear SO much with little mini skirts.
Fitted Turtlencks
I love to have a few fitted and thin turtlenecks on hand for my mini skirts. They make for a super sleek look and you can then easily layer a blazer or shacket over them without the bulk.
Tees
Yes, tees, graphic tees, solid tees, whatever you like. This goes great with a mini skirt. I like ones that are a bit loose so you can tuck them in and let them blouse a little.
Pullover Sweaters
I recently tried on a polo pullover sweater with a leather mini and fell in love. I’m now on the hunt for one that’s perfect! But any pullover sweater is great. Do a simple front tuck, or do the bra tuck trick, for a pulled together look.
Jackets To Wear With Fall Mini Skirts
And to complete the look for fall and winter, jackets are ideal to pair with these mini skirts. They add that third piece for a polished look. I love a good long blazer, or leather jacket. But for something more trendy, a leather shacket or oversized button down is cool and edgy. And you can always do a long trench to add some length.
To Stay Warm, Add Tights!
Adding tights to a mini skirt is such a classic, and sweet combination. I like my fleece-lined tights for winter as they truly keep you warm and toasty! But if you’re still in fall and need something not as warm, regular opaque tights work perfectly. Extra points for a cool printed or textured tight.
My Favorite Shoes To Pair With Mini Skirts
Boots, boots and more boots. This is their time to shine! I love a Dr Marten, a classic suede knee high, or even an ankle bootie or mid-calf boot. Anything works honestly! And if you want to go with a non-boot option, I do love a chunky loafer with a mini skirt for the ultimate 90’s school girl vibe. You can add a cute ankle sock or tight to make it super fashion forward!
