While outfit planning for #TBScon I thought a tee and pencil skirt was exactly what I wanted to do. It’s a good mix of professional, put together, but also a little edgy and fun at the same time when styled the right way. And in order to do just that, I thought adding a graphic t-shirt would be perfect. Which got me thinking, it’s really the perfect juxtaposition. When thinking of how to style a t-shirt for the office, this is exactly what I think of!
I’ve had this pencil skirt for YEARS and really haven’t worn it at all except once before. I was excited to get some good use out of it during #TBScon and wore this look for the conference day followed by the gifting and networking suite. It was super comfortable (minus my feet killing me by the end of the day) and I think this combination may be my new favorite.
How To Style A T-Shirt For The Office
Keep The Rest Of Your Outfit Dressed Up
If you paired your t-shirt with your most casual officewear, you’ll just look like you didn’t try at all. Instead, pair it with something more dressy. It’s the unexpected combination that makes it feel cool and elevated.
Add A Third Piece
By adding a third piece like a blazer or little silk neck scarf, you’ll make a t-shirt feel more intentional and complete. Versus looking like you just ran out of the house without finishing getting dressed. I think this is key to making everything look complete.
Keep Your T-Shirt Simple And Tailored
Let’s leave the really oversized, messy, and even stained or worn in t-shirts in the closet. These are not meant for the office. Instead choose a clean, tailored-fitting tee that is maybe a tough of a heavier weight. I’d also keep your tissue cotton tees out of the mix here. There are also tees that just feel elevated like ones with shoulder pads in them. These all feel like a step up from your cotton tee in your pajama drawer. Below are some great tees that would work for the office for a great business casual outfit idea.
