I don’t know about anyone else but I run hot. I am always warm and I don’t like being warm. I want to be cool, chilled, a light breeze. I don’t enjoy sweating. I hate summer, but love being tan, I get that’s a problem. But there is one style trick that saves me this time of year and that’s my jean short trick for fall.
Reaching for my denim shorts, in honestly any wash, is one of my favorite bottoms to reach for in the fall. Especially those earlier weeks when it’s a bit warm during the day and you aren’t sure what to wear without overheating.

How To Style Jean Shorts For Fall
Wearing your jean shorts in the fall paired with all your new fall essentials is one of my go-to tips on how to dress for fall when it’s hot. You can start adding in a few layers, heavier fabrics and even boots as things start to cool down even more. But your shorts really don’t need to be put away for fall! This is no surprise as I love to wear leather shorts or trouser style shorts in the fall.
But I think for some reason we just associate jean shorts with the summer. Denim cut offs with tank tops and sandals come to mind. But just like how my straight-leg jeans are my most loved jeans, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t wear our denim shorts well into the fall season.

Choose The Right Shorts
The base of this outfit is really important here. I really love just a classic pair of slightly oversized denim shorts for fall. Choose medium to darker washes if you can. But a light wash works just fine if you like.
And you can definitely wear an ecru or white denim short in the fall. I don’t believe in the no white after Labor Day rule. Especially when it comes to a staple like denim. One of my favorite fall outfits is always in white or Ecru denim with lots of beiges, tans and brown. The monochromatic look is super chic and always a classic combination.
Keep your linen shorts in the closet for the spring and summer months. We want to stick to just your classic denim shorts for this look.

Stick To Fall Colors And Fabrics
My rule for dressing for fall is to always stick to the fall colors and fabrics. It’ll help make your outfit feel more appropriate for fall. But this rule isn’t a firm one!
I love the idea of wearing a bright pink sweater with denim shorts and a burgundy loafer. So while you don’t have to stick to fall colors, I would at least stick to fall silhouettes. Sweaters, button downs, blazers and so on. You can usually make this work in any colorway so long as you’re emulating the fall vibe.

Choose Fall Footwear
Footwear is really the dead giveaway and can make an outfit feel completely off. Leave the sandals in the closet and stick to all the fall footwear. From suede sneakers, to loafers, ballet flats and so on, you’ll feel like fall even in your beloved denim shorts in the middle of September or October.

Today’s Fall Look In Denim Shorts
This look is one of my go-to this time of year. I really struggle with getting too warm too quickly. So my outfits this time of year are usually jeans and a tee or tank to keep me cool. Or the reverse, longer sleeve, or layers paired with shorts. I need the balance to feel, well, balanced in temperature.
This suede blazer is a beauty and going to be on repeat for the fall and winter seasons. And it’s giving ultimate prep vibes with a longer line denim short and white button down. For the shoes, I opted for a burgundy loafer. It can be tricky to mix shades of brown and found the burgundy worked perfectly. Adding a soft pale blue bag pulled the whole look together. Baby blue is one of my favorite colors to wear with brown no matter the time of year.
Ps this ear cuff is from Sezane and it’s just the coolest. You can shop it here. It comes with one for each ear but it’s kind of fun to just wear one at a time.

Don’t put those denim shorts away just yet. You can continue to get some use out of them as we experience warmer fall days, or if you’re like me and overheat easily, can feel cool and stylish all at the same time.
