One thing I think we all know about me is that I love denim. I mean my website has the word indigo in it which is a nod to denim.
So it’s no surprise that when the denim trench coat trend started to emerge, I was ready to jump on it. And while a denim trench coat sounds like a lot, yes it is, it’s really easy to style though.
How To Style The Denim Trench Coat
Don’t Overthink It
First and foremost, don’t overthink this. If you’re reading this you probably are like me and have had your fair share of denim jackets in your life. This is really no different. Sure it’s safe to say it’s slightly bolder, but who cares?
Wear It With Things You’d Pair With Denim
Think about the things you’d style with denim. Whether it’s a denim jacket or shirt or simply denim jeans. I usually love to pair denim with olive green and black or cream. It’s perfect for rich fall hues, or bright bold colors. And it works perfectly with neutrals, right?
Nothing’s changing. This fun denim piece can be worn with all of those things too. No need to even stress about it!
Can You Wear A Denim Trench With Denim
We love a Canadian Tuxedo, which is simply denim on denim. And yes, you can 100% wear a denim trench with jeans. It’s not too much.
While I think it can feel overwhelming, and it’s definitely more of a bold statement, it may be something you want to wear when you’re aiming for a really interesting and bold outfit. Because it’s safe to say you’ll probably get
Pick The Right Length Trench Coat
I think a trench coat should be on the longer size. While we wore shorter ones back in the 2010’s I am here for the longer length in the 2020’s. I find this to be elongating and much more fashionable.
To keep this trend feeling new and fresh, I would opt for a very long denim trench coat. A short one may feel dated and not very modern. In my book when it comes to jackets and coats these days, the longer the better.
And yeah, there are exceptions to that because I am also here for the cropped jacket trend. But I think when it comes to the denim trench, go long!
Keep The Hemlines Different
This is just a general rule of thumb with wearing trenches and coats with your outfits, specifically skirts and dresses, but keeping the hemlines at different lengths is key for proportions and balance.
You can see how I styled this with a mini skirt. It just balances out the longer and more full length and lots of fabric that this denim trench coat has.
Choose A Denim Wash You Love – When In Doubt, Go Dark
I think everyone has their go to denim wash. Mine is definitely a range but I tend to lean more medium to light wash these days.
While I love a lighter wash, I think for me and how I want to style this for fall, I am choosing a slightly darker wash. Not super dark, but a good medium to dark wash that will go with more.
Lighter washes can feel more summery, but it’s not a black and white rule to only wear light wash in the spring and summer. Go with what feels like your vibe.
Things I’d avoid with a denim trench? Major distressing. Stick to a more clean wash. This will be easier to style and less likely to fall out of trend as quickly.

Choose A Cool Shoe
The denim trench does feel super casual and it can easily feel sloppy too if you ask me. It’s heavy, it’s a lot of fabric, it’s bold. I would wear these with intention and that really shines with the shoe choice if you ask me.
I will be styling my denim trench coat with all my cooler shoes in my closet. Think silver loafers like I did here in today’s post, or maybe a really unique bold and chunky sneaker. An Adidas Sambas or Gazelle are super on trend right now, and of course, the Birkenstock clog. these are all great options.
And for cooler temperatures, try a lug sole Chelsea boot or knee-high boot.
Ways I’d Style My Denim Trench Coat
I am still dreaming up ways to style this fun denim trench coat. While I plan on wearing it with more mini skirts and loafers, I also have a few other ideas.
With Jeans
I’ll 100% be trying out a Canadian Tuxedo look with my go-to straight leg jeans and a denim shirt, or maybe just a white tee or concert tee.
With A Fall Dress
One thing I hate about a denim jacket, is how casual they feel. Plus, once you get into fall, their time is limited. Instead, a denim trench is perfect. I’ll be pairing this with my fall dresses and keeping the hemline lengths in mind!
With White, Olive and Black Washed Denim
Blue denim with white jeans, olive chinos and black washed denim are the first colors and options that come to mind for me. I’d wear a denim jacket with all of these, so it’s a no brainer for the trench version.
With Leather Pants
It’s no secret I am a huge lover of my faux leather pants. Black and brown ones! This is the perfect topper for them. And bonus points if you have burgundy or merlot colored leather pants, I think that combo would be perfection.
