A trend we are seeing more and more lately when it comes to spring jackets, is the collarless jacket. Lightweight spring jackets are a must have this time of year. They allow you to take your summer pieces out a little early so you can wear them on those spring days, or add to your winter to spring transition pieces to bring them into the new season.

How To Wear A Collarless Jacket
We’ve seen the collarless jacket trend for a few years now. The revival of the lady jacket, which honestly never went away, but instead became a hot street style trend and mainstream, has taken hold of many prepsters. It’s a jacket style that definitely leans more preppy, polished and feminine.
If you’ve been an Indigoer for a while, you know those 3 words are NOT how I would define my style. So the collarless lady jacket was one I never wanted or felt the need to try. Until the collarless utility jacket, and denim jackets, started to emerge. And so now I’m all in on the trend and thinking of how to wear a collarless jacket with my closet. Let’s dive into some style tips for this trend.
what is a collarless jacket?
A collarless jacket can be a variety of jacket styles such as blazers, chore jackets, denim or tweed, that do not have a collar. Instead, they typically have a rounded neckline on many, or simply no lapels on a blazer.

Choose A Style That Works With Your Closet
First and foremost, pick a style that works with your closet. I feel like when the collarless jacket first became more popular we really only saw the tweed styles. Thesse felt really feminine and preppy for me so I didn’t want to touch it with a 10 ft pole.
Now that there are denim jacket variations, chore jackets and utility ones, I’m more inclined to give this a try. So don’t just add any of them to your closet thinking you’ll start wearing this new trend, instead, choose a style that works with the closet you already own. This will make putting outfits together easy.
Swap Your Regular Third Piece For A Collarless Option
Don’t overthink this trend and new item in your closet. You can, for the most part, treat this just like you would have your favorite denim jacket or leather jacket. Add it to your go-to denim and tees, over a dress or trousers.
This will keep your outfits feeling more in line with your personal style, and will feel less like a trend is wearing you and instead, you rocking a trend. Adding a third piece to your look is a great way to make outfits feel more put-together and this is the perfect topper to try.

Choose The Right Base Layer
I think one of the main style tips to keep in mine when putting looks together with a collarless jacket, is to keep the neckline in mind. When thinking about what to wear under a collarless jacket, I think there are two rules of thumbs here to follow. First, your neckline should go below the collar. So a v-neck, square neck, or scoop. Anything at or around the collar line of the jacket may feel a little off.
Second, go higher than the collar line with a turtleneck. I think this look only really works when you’re doing a monochromatic look.
Anything in-between these two necklines can compete with the (lack there of) collar of the jacket. You would really need the base layer to line up so perfectly with the shape of the jacket’s neckline to make it feel just right.

Types Of Collarless Jackets To Shop
Denim Collarless Jackets
Swap out your classic denim jacket for a denim collarless one. Try one with a puff sleeve, or a more clean line version like this one I love from M.M.LaFleur. Wear these with all the things you loved to pair your beloved denim jacket with.
Chore and Utility Collarless Jackets
This was the selling point for me to try this trend was when I saw chore and utility versions of this jacket. I love the one featured in today’s look from Everlane in the brown shade. It’s such a great third piece to add to jeans and a tee, or throw on over dresses and jumpsuits for a little layer.

Tweed and Knit Collarless Jackets
These Chanel inspired jackets have really been a classic piece in fashion for decades. And now they are more accessible than ever since this trend has taken off. Style with trousers for a proper office look, or dresses. And to dress up your jeans, this is a perfect topper with a pair of ballet flats or mary janes.
