It’s no secret that I have a serious love for the denim jacket. They’re so classic, come in so many different variations and truly pull any outfit together in a pinch. I’ve also been known to add a denim jacket to just about anything to validate purchasing that dress or pretty little top in a store.
I love them so much, I had to write a whole blog post about them. I can’t wait to share with you a ton of different ways on how to wear a denim jacket.
What Can You Wear With A Denim Jacket
everything!
Just kidding…Sort of.
A jean jacket really is the perfect third piece to an outfit. It pulls looks together by adding that extra layer. Truly, there isn’t anything I’ve found that you CAN’T wear a denim jacket with. Okay, maybe a ballgown, but honestly, that would still be a cool juxtaposition kinda vibe that I could totally get behind.
Personally, I love to wear a denim jacket with my black jeans or white jeans, or really any other non-denim pants. For instance, in the summertime, a jean jacket goes great over a dress or romper. You can always do double denim too, also known as the Canadian Tuxedo.
The thing I love most about a denim jacket though is how easily it dresses up or down an outfit. So if you have a fancy dress, just add a denim jacket and some sneakers, and you’ve instantly transformed your work dress into a weekend dress.
The same goes for a really casual, lazy outfit. Adding a denim jacket makes your sweatpants feel like a cool street-style outfit and not like you just rolled out of bed.
The versatility of this closet staple is exactly why it is so great. And once you have a few different styles in your closet, you can mix up all sorts of denim jacket outfits.
How To Dress Up A Denim Jacket
A denim jacket definitely emits that laid-back cool girl vibe. But I think you can totally wear a jean jacket and feel more dressed up with a few tips.
For example, pair it with a pencil skirt or shift dress to make it feel more business casual. You can also drape it over your shoulders (we call this the blogger cape!) and it feels more like a style moment than just throwing on a jean jacket.
And just like any outfit, adding heels can really transform a look. This really works well with a dark wash denim jacket for a more business casual feel.
Different Jean Jacket Styles
There’s a reason why I own 5 different jean jackets. They’re ALL different. It’s sort of like having those different white tees, each one has a different look, fit and style. So if you wear a denim jacket a lot, you probably have a few styles too. But if you’re just dipping your toe into the denim jacket trend, you may want to start with the staples first.
Personally, I think everyone should own a regular fit, medium wash or dark wash, jean jacket. One that is flattering, feels comfortable and has a bit of stretch in it. For light wash, I’d proceed with caution if you’re just investing in one as you’ll get more use out of a medium or darker wash.
You can wear this style with just about everything. Dresses, jeans, trousers, skirts, sweatpants. Seriously. Everything.
You can also go for ones that have a little distressing in them. But if you want to get the MOST use out of them, you’ll want to stick to one that doesn’t have any major holes in it. Below are a few favorite classic blue denim jackets you can wear for years to come.

Once you have your first denim jacket, you can start expanding. Oversized boyfriend denim jackets are great for that cool street-style look. They’re also great paired over girly springy dresses.
I also love my oversized denim jacket for traveling. It’s perfect with leggings and is roomy enough to add a sweatshirt underneath it too.
If you’re also feeling like your denim jacket is starting to feel a little dated, it might be that you’re wearing the shrunken style from the 2010s. For 2022, we’re wearing a more oversized fit which pairs nicely with more fitted styles underneath. From fitted dresses to tanks with jeans. It’s an easy Millennial style swap you can make for your wardrobe.

Adding a colored denim jacket is also really fun, especially if you’re not into regular ol denim! You can choose a black denim jacket or a white one which is always nice for summer.
I even have a floral printed one and a blush one. There are so many color options to choose from that you can definitely find something that suits your personal style.

How To Wear A Denim Jacket In Different Ways
Denim Jackets With Summer Dresses
Anytime I head out of the house in a summer dress, I almost always grab a denim jacket. Especially if it’s night time. Perfect for when the sun goes down and it gets a tad cooler. You can also tie it around your waist to create some shape too. Or if you’re just getting warm, it’s a great solution that also looks good!
Doesn’t matter if you’re wearing a mini dress, maxi, or midi, a denim jacket, especially a classic fit one that hits at the waist, is super flattering. It also helps to create a shape in some of those more flowy dresses.

Jumpsuits & Rompers
Just like with my favorite dresses, I treat my rompers and jumpsuits the same. It’s a great added layer. You can choose an oversized denim jacket for a more casual vibe like I did with this black lace romper. It dressed it down a bit which is a great way to extend more of your closet. , Or a classic dark wash one that’s more fitted that paired perfectly with my spring floral jumpsuit.

Denim Jackets With Fall Dresses
The one season you really can’t wear a denim jacket in is winter. It’s just too cold. But fall is a great time to transition those sweater dresses and winter dresses into the season. I love to add a denim jacket to sweater dresses to give them shape. Or even to winter floral dresses (like I did here with booties).
A denim jacket is the perfect piece that really helps to dress things down. And they go perfectly with all those winter dresses in the fall!

Jean Jackets With Midi Skirts
This became one of my go-to outfits and I just love how pulled together it looks. It’s really just a white t-shirt paired with a great midi skirt and sneakers.
You can also swap out the white sneakers for a sandal or heel which would instantly dress this up. Perfect for a dressier look that could work for casual Friday in the office or dinner with friends.

Jean Jackets With Summer Shorts
Come summer, I live in shorts. Usually denim ones too. Which is usually when I add a fun colored denim jacket, a white denim jacket or printed one. But when I grab my linen shorts, or black, white denim options, I love adding a blue jean denim jacket over it.

Jackets Paired With Non-Denim Bottoms
You can totally do denim on denim (the Canadian tuxedo) but personally, I love mixing my khakis, black jeans and even joggers with a denim jacket. They add a bit of contrast and the perfect light layer to your looks. This is my go-to combo for spring and fall when you’re in that in-between weather.

Denim Jackets With Leggings
My fall and travel uniform. Whenever I’m feeling lazy, nothing quite beats comfortable leggings a cotton tee and an oversized denim jacket. Or a denim shacket. It’s a complete look and so comfy.
When I travel, this is what I reach for on travel day. I’ll layer a sweatshirt underneath if it’s going to be cooler out. You can make this feel a little more elevated with faux leather leggings and a cool mule or sneaker!

Denim Jackets With Trousers
Trousers are having a big moment right now. Styling them not just for the office, but for hanging with your friends casually. Add a cropped denim jacket to a looser fitting trouser to balance it out. For tailored more slim fit trousers, you can try an oversized or longer denim shacket.

How To Style Denim Shirt Jackets
A denim shirt jacket (or shacket as we call them sometimes) is one of my favorite things in my closet. The perfect third piece.
Try a denim shacket over leggings and a tee, or paired with a matching short set. They also work great with a straight leg jean too. The slightly oversized fit is great with more slim fits, or short pieces like mini dresses or shorts.

How To Style Cropped Denim Jackets
I love a cropped, slightly oversized, denim jacket. It’s truly the answer to all those looser bottoms when you want to feel balanced. Since we aren’t doing a super shrunken denim jacket as much anymore, a cropped slightly looser fit is perfect.
You can also find really sweet lady jackets in denim that feel preppy and polished.
