I never knew I needed a velvet blazer in my life until I slipped this one on from J.Crew. The fit, the fabric, and the comfort level were everything. Today I’m excited to style this holiday-perfect piece with my blog friend who I finally got to meet in real life on my latest trip to NYC, Meghan! She’s the blogger behind Wit & Whimsy and also Paris Perfected, a super cool service to help you plan the perfect itinerary for your next trip to Paris. I just may have to have her help me on my next trip. Since she and I have somewhat similar styles, we thought it would be fun to show two ways to style this closet favorite. It’s truly a closet essential and great for holiday parties, but also for winter office looks. It’s stylish, professional but also a bit festive!
J.Crew Velvet Blazer
This blazer is such a great classic fit. It’s not too long that it feels oversized or too trendy. But it’s long enough for me with my long torso that it feels super flattering and like it’s meant for my body. It has shoulder pads that aren’t too overwhelming but give the blazer a good shape. This blazer also comes in a few colors if black isn’t your thing. The green is beautiful and I almost went with that one for this style challenge. And it also comes in a pretty blushy pink. The thing I love most about this blazer though is the stretch factor. It doesn’t feel constricting like many blazers can, instead it’s insanely comfortable!
J.Crew Velvet Blazer Product Details
J.Crew’s velvet blazer is a classic fit that hits at mid-thigh for an ultra-flattering length. There’s one button closure and a back vent and comes in numeric sizing. I went with a size 4 which is my usual size. The blazer is also lined and is a cotton/elastane blend. There’s also a chest pocket, hip pocket and even an interior pocket for a classic blazer fit.
How To Style A Velvet Blazer
Pair With Any Denim
As you can see both Meghan and I paired our black velvet blazers with our go-to denim. Whether it’s a light wash relaxed fit or black skinny jeans, this blazer really works with any and all denim. Wear a velvet blazer with all your go-to bottoms.
Mix With Your Suit Separates
Swap out your matching suit separates for a velvet blazer for a more stylish 9-5 look. I also think this would be great with your other trousers that aren’t black. Think navy, khaki, merlot and more. Truly think this would pair nicely with so much!
Dress Down Or Up!
This piece is super versatile to dress up or down. Pair with leather ankle booties and jeans for a more casual look. Or pair it with a sequined jumpsuit for a fabulous look.
J.Crew Velvet Blazer Outfit Ideas
For A Night Out Or Holiday Party
Paired with a sequined tank and black coated denim, this is a great outfit for holiday parties or cocktails. I love the coated denim since it adds a bit of shine and makes the outfit feel a little more dressy. They almost look like black leather actually which is kind of amazing. Add a black patent or suede pump to complete your look.
For A Holiday Lunch Or Business Casual Networking
Meghan styled hers exactly how I would for a more casual take on a velvet blazer. Paired with relaxed straight leg denim in a light wash instantly tones down the dressiness of the blazer. A silk camisole is a great addition that allows you to wear this for business casual or dinner with friends without being overdone. And the perfect pump from Sarah Flint. After watching Meghan walk around in these heels I knew I needed a pair. You can check out her full outfit post and details on her blog right here!
