If you’re a Millennial or heck, Gen X too, trying to figure out mastering summer trends, this post is for you. There are so many summer fashion trends happening that it can be hard to figure out which ones you want to pick and choose to incorporate into your current wardrobe. So today’s is all about the Millennial’s guide to mastering summer trends.
As Millennials, we are officially in that moment where our closets are starting to feel dated. Fashion trends are popping up left and right and much of our closet is feeling like it could use a refresh. And while hopefully many of you made some good Millennial outfit swaps in general and also some swaps for summer, I want to make sure we are also giving new summer trends a try!
If staying on top of the season’s hottest trends is something you enjoy (hi that’s me!), then let’s dive into what’s trending right now, how to style the latest 2023 summer trends, and where to shop to get the look. Fear not, fellow millennials, this summer trend guide has you covered.
The Millennial’s Guide to Mastering Summer 2023 Style
Bermuda Shorts
You either love this or you don’t. And I have to say, I love it. I wasn’t sure how I’d style this until I threw on some heels. And that’s when I knew, this has to be a dressed up look if you want it to feel chic and elevated.
Yes, you can 100% style these with flats too. I think a slightly looser fitting bermuda short is key here. And keeping things proportionate is crucial. A high rise bermuda short with a crop top and a long linen button down could be so cute. Or an oversized graphic tee tucked in with a sleek sandal. All good options!
All The Matching Sets
The matching set is the ultimate Gen Z trend. From cotton or linen shorts and button downs. To matching workout sets of biker shorts and long line sports bras. There are so many options for matching sets that you can pick and choose what works for you.
I’m a big fan of the pull-on short and button down shirt matching set. And also very into a short suit set. It’s giving Cher’s 90’s matching sets a la Clueless and that’s exactly why we love it!
Vests
No we are not doing the fitted denim vest that was basically a denim jacket without sleeves. Instead we’re leaning into even more tailoring with a tailored vest.
You can style these so many ways and go for more fitted options, or a looser style. You can wear it buttoned up or open.
Pair it with loose fitting trousers. Or style it with a pair of denim shorts and chunky sandals. I love this in a linen fabric for summer to help keep you comfortable in the heat.
Crochet Pieces
I am HERE for the crochet and mesh trend. It’s a bit boho and is a throwback to the 70s. But also a nod to the early aughts as the 70’s came back with vengeance.
Try a crochet dress for summer with chunky platforms. Or a crochet and mesh style top paired with denim or trousers. Before you wear any crochet, read this post on my favorite undergarments to wear in the summer.
And if you’re not ready to jump in to crochet clothing, try a crochet bag. From totes, to crossbodies, we are seeing crochet everywhere we look.
Maxi Skirts
While maxi skirts as a whole are having a big moment, I think the longer denim is having the BIGGER moment. From denim midi’s to maxis, these are definitely going to be around for a minute.
Style them casually with a tank and sneakers or a cute sandal. Yes, this is the perfect look to try with Sambas. Or dress it up a bit with a heel and a nicer top.
Also try the maxi slip skirt dressed up or down as well. I love how @kimair styled this neon slip maxi skirt with an oversized button down (another trend we’ll cover below!).
White Trousers
The trouser isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Styling a white trouser for summer is really easy. You can go casual with a sandal or slide and a tank.
Or dress it up with a cute summer top and a low block heel. You can even knock out two trends at once and pair it with a matching white vest.
When choosing a trouser for summer, always opt for linen. You can find some nice tailored ones that feel more polished. Or go casual with a pull-on style.
The Adidas Sambas
Let’s get caught up here on the hot sneaker trend for 2023. We’ve been seeing a lot of chunky Dad sneakers over the last couple of years. And right now, the new hot girl on the block is the Adidas Sambas.
The Sambas are a much more slim style of sneaker. Low profile and simple. However, they also come in really fun colors. So you can either go more minimal in the classic cream, black and grey combo. Or try something more colorful.
Styling the Sambas OG sneakers is just like any other sneaker. Swap your usual Converse or Veja’s for these. Wear them with looser 90’s style jeans, or with a sundress. Pair with a maxi skirt and graphic concert tee. Or wear them with a mini skirt and some scrunched-up socks.
And if the Sambas aren’t for you, or you can’t find them since they seem to be sold out everywhere, you can also try the Gazelle sneaker. Super similar look and also comes in lots of colors.
Oversized Button Ups
The oversized button-up is the new third piece. A third piece is that finishing touch to an outfit. It can be a variety of things, and often times us Millennials like to grab our denim jacket. But to freshen up your outfit and make it feel fresh, instead try an oversized button up.
These can be an effortless layer over a fitted midi dress. Or layered over shorts and a tank. Just keep most of the outfit pretty fitted and close to your body so that the oversized button up feels flowy and not sloppy. Flowy button up, plus loose clothing, equals a bit of a mess.
Don’t let new trends come and go. Pick and choose just a couple that you may want to try and incorporate into your wardrobe that feels natural.
