I’m not a big of the “Top 9” on Instagram that goes on around the last week of the year. But I am a BIG fan of the top songs of your year from Spotify. It’s always so fun to see what you’ve listened to. And also interesting to see what your friends or favorite Instagram or Twitter account people listened to as well. With over 37k minutes listened in 2019 by yours truly, I clearly love to listen to music. I’m usually always listening while in the car, traveling and often times while working from home.
This year they did it a bit different and also added in the full decade since you started playing music on Spotify. I remember playing Spotify back in college and thinking “no one’s going to use this”. We were still buying songs and albums on iTunes and listening to them on our iPod shuffles.
With my year in review in from Spotify, here’s what I listened to. I’d love to know, what were your top artists and songs for the year and decade?
Number One Artist, Taylor Swift
I admittedly spent 57 hours listening to her. I mean, Lover may be one of the best albums of all time. My top song was “You Need To Calm Down”. But let’s be honest, Cruel Summer, Lover, False God and London Boy are SO damn good. I’m actually a little surprised that this single was my most played on her album.
My Top 5 Artists of 2019
- Taylor Swift
- Post Malone
- Ariana Grande (shocked by this because I didn’t really like her until her latest album)
- Kygo (he was also my artist of the decade)
- Odesza (this is my go-to artist for office music to listen to!)
Whenever someone asks me what kind of music I listen to, I always struggle to define it. I love that Spotify does this every year for me. As a 32-year-old, I feel like I’ll always be a pop person since I grew up on Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Backstreet Boys. But I also love a bit of EDM (nothing crazy club style, but I think Kygo may be considered EDM). And Indietronica. Which is the exact genre of music I could never define for myself. The artists I listened to in that genre were Ellie Goulding, Phoenix and Odesza. It’s like a bit Indie rock with a top of EDM to it.
