On Monday, Hurricane Irma made her way to Atlanta and we were all expecting to lose power. After watching how devastating it was to Florida, we thought for sure Atlanta would be a mess. I decided to not be in the middle of writing a blog post for that to happen, and figured I’d clean, do a face mask or purge my closet during the outage. Guess what, the power never went out. And somehow I managed to not do a damn thing on Monday but sit and watch 90 Day Fiancé and Anderson Cooper cover the hurricane. So yesterday I decided to take the day to get my shit together. And alas, a blog post.
I wore this outfit on Sunday as I ran some errands to prepare for the storm. To be honest, I was so beyond consumed by the hurricane that I barely got off the couch until around 2 that day. My heart goes out to those who were in her path of devastation. Finally free from my couch, I headed to Costco for puppy supplies (more on that below) to the grocery store for some non-perishable foods, and then off to the park with a friend before the rain came in. It quickly got more cold as the day went on. You could feel the storm was coming soon.
Thanks to social media, I saw that the Atlanta Humane Society was asked by the state of Georgia to open an emergency shelter to house over a thousand animals who were coming in from Florida. They were in dire need of supplies as they had to put together a 60,000 square foot space into a make shift animal shelter within the day. I headed straight to Costco and grabbed a few things off their wish list like towels, plastic bags and puppy pads. I headed up to Roswell to drop things off and couldn’t believe my eyes. There were dozens of people dropping things off left and right. They were flooded (no pun intended) with supplies and support. The shelter already had a handful of dogs who were barking away and it instantly brought me to tears.
I don’t know why the animals just really effect me the most in these disasters. It’s probably the fact that they’re absolutely helpless and abandoned and just want a warm cozy blanket to curl up into. It felt good to physically drop things off versus sending money to the charity (although both are very helpful). But actually walking in and seeing what those few supplies I brought could help support made me feel really good.
I’ve been saying I was going to volunteer at AHS for years. I actually even went through orientation and training about 10 years ago. However, I left so heartbroken from seeing such sad puppies that I never went back. I thought I could never get through a volunteer shift without either crying or taking home a handful of dogs. I’m hoping that now I’m older, and know I can not handle more than just Pork in my tiny apartment, that it might be easier. So as soon as I got home I applied to volunteer. Still waiting to hear back as I believe they only allow you to join if there are actual spots needed. Fingers crossed the puppies need a dog walker who can show them some love, because that I’m very good at. I consider it my specialty.
If you’re looking to help Atlanta Humane Society care for the displaced Hurricane Irma animals, please donate here. Sending out lots of love to those effected by the storm. If you have a favorite charity to donate to please leave it below.
