One of my favorite wardrobe essentials is my utility jacket. It’s an essential piece I love for so many outfit scenarios. It’s ideal for light layering in the summer when you need a little something for those cooler nights. A utility jacket is great for helping to take outfits from season to season like summer to fall. And it’s my go-to jacket for those cooler spring days. The season I probably wear it the most honestly.
For years, I’ve been a die hard Madewell utility jacket fan. But all good things must come to an end. And this summer I picked up a new utility jacket that I’m loving as a bit of an update to the classic. Plus, it’s helping me tackle this weird in-between summer to fall weather.
How I’m Taking My Utility Jacket Into Fall
This transition season is always a struggle. Especially in the south. It’s hot still, but you want to wear fall items. And my favorite trick is just easy light layers. Instead of wearing my Madewell utility jacket AGAIN, which I’ve had for years, I finally added a new style to my closet.
This Pistola Camilo star print military jacket. It’s since gotten a slight update and is now the Cammy Star Print Twill jacket. I love the big black stars across it giving it a more edgy look. And it’s a bit lighter and has more movement than a more stiff and structured military jacket. It’s insanely soft too.
Over the summer I’d pair it over shorts as you’ve seen here. But it’s really the ideal military jacket for fall. Just paired simply with black mom jeans and a white v-neck tee, and you’re good to go. Wear it with sneakers for a more casual look, or heels for an edgier vibe. I think I’ll be wearing this fun utility jacket all season long. Until it’s time to whip out my favorite leather jacket of course.

I can’t recommend this entire outfit enough. It’s all of my favorite things in one. This Z Supply v-neck tee is so soft and may be replacing all of my Madewell tees.
As for these black vintage straight leg jeans, they’re new from Madewell. I’d recommend sizing down one size, or going with your smaller size in the brand. I’m usually a 26/27 in their denim and went for the 26. For a splurge, these Tamara Mellon heels are a closet favorite.
