There’s something about the beginning of fall that always reminds me of citrus. As a kid I remember doing a citrus sale at our school. It always marked the beginning of the season and it meant I would devour tangelos by the pound. And if you haven’t had a tangelo, go buy them, so delicious. So when Pinnacle® Vodka asked me to whip up a citrus inspired cocktail to enjoy, I instantly knew what I wanted to make. I grabbed their Ruby Red Grapefruit flavor and some tart and sweet grapefruits for the simplest of cocktails, the Salty Dog. Sure this is just your basic greyhound (vodka and grapefruit) but the addition of salt on the rim takes it to a whole new level. It only looks more complicated but it also adds another layer of flavor. The flavor of salt paired with the sweet and tart grapefruit is really a great combination.
Who doesn’t love a three-ingredient cocktail? I’m sure you have all of these ingredients readily available and they’re great to entertain with for brunches. They’re usually a great compliment to a more sweet brunch item like my pumpkin pancakes or blueberry french toast. It balances all the flavors out so well.
For a little twist on this classic, make it a touch spicy with muddled jalapeños, or maybe mix in some cayenne pepper to the salt for a little something extra. Because I love anything spicy, you know you can count on me adding some kick to my morning brunch cocktail!
