When it comes to strong opinions in the fashion world, I’m usually pretty open-minded. Just don’t give me anything ruffled or peasant. Period. But one thing I’ve always had a strong feeling against a particular type of clothing. And that’s vests.
I’ve felt this way for years. Since middle school probably. I never understood the concept of having a sleeveless jacket basically. And to me, they are always very much associated with preppy styles. You see fleece vests a lot in the south at frat parties or college bars. And it seems most men held onto those pretty strongly through adulthood. As those men got older, they still wore them with plaid shirts like a standard uniform. Maybe this is a southern thing, I’m not sure. But I find this look to be very common among southern men and it is just a vibe I am so not into.
The Shearling Vest That Changed My Mind
But recently, I was gifted this cozy sterling vest from Talbots and I have to say, I don’t hate it. When I opened it up and saw it I was excited to try to style it for myself. And I of course had to lean into a more edgy vibe. This look is most definitely not preppy or clean cut. Paired with faux leather leggings (these are the Commando ones) and Dr. Martens, this look feels edgy and cool. And layered the vest over a simple black turtleneck, a closet staple.
So while I may be changing my tune about some vests, I can assure you I will only be wearing them like this. And not with plaid, button-downs, or any kind of loafer. That’s just not my vibe! More cool vests to shop and style below. I think all of these are pretty cool and would be a great addition to your closet (yes, even mine!)
