Everyone’s skincare routine will definitely vary. But so will your own skincare routine from season to season. For winter, these are a few of my favorite products to keep dry skin at bay. But for summer, it’s a whole different story. Between the sweat, the sun and being outdoors much more, you’ll want to make sure you’re taking good care of your skin. And protecting it against any sun damage. So today I want to chat about my summer skincare for oily skin. Because HI! I’m oily!
Should I Change My Skincare Routine For Summer?
The answer? YES!
Many of us will become more oily in the summer for a few reasons. And that’s why it’s important to update your skincare routine with the seasons. The heat and humidity in the summer will increase your skin’s oil production. Even more so if you spend time outside by the pool or doing a workout. So an updated summer beauty routine is key.
This can lead to more breakouts and congested pores. I’m naturally quite oily so my routine is always geared towards keeping excess oil production at bay. But I change out my skin cleanser for summer and definitely am more diligent about using a toner.
And for those of you who are super dry, you may actually find your skin looks better in the summer due to the humidity. Just be careful because your usual moisture-rich products may be TOO hydrating come summer and can then cause breakouts. If you find this to be an issue, I’d recommend adding in a toner and switching to an oil-free moisturizer for warmer months.
My Summer Skincare For Oily Skin
For summer, my routine is really just about the same as it is year-round. I will always (on a good skincare day) cleanse and tone, and apply a serum and moisturizer with SPF. This doesn’t really change for me. But the TYPE of cleanser or toner I use will vary based on the season and my skincare needs. Plus, there are SPF products I make sure I always have on hand when out and about to make sure I don’t burn! Here are some of my must-have summer skincare products to combat oil and breakouts.
Cleansers For Summer
Since we’re combatting an increase in oil production, you’ll want to use a cleanser with chemical exfoliants. This doesn’t mean it’s a scrub or anything, but that it has an acid in it like lactic acid or salicylic in it to help remove dirt and oil really well. A few favorites are Cosmedix Purity Clean and also Beautycounter’s Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser. The Beautycounter one has jojoba beads that gently exfoliate dirt and oil. This can be used daily without irritation.
My Holy Grail Toner
A toner will be your saving grace. If there’s one product you add or change in your routine for summer for dealing with oil, it should be a great toner. You’ll see a HUGE difference. Last summer I started to break out on my chest for the first time ever due to the most miserable humid summer (and too many walks outside). A few days of using a toner on my chest and it was cleared up in no time. This Purity Balance Exfoliating Toner is my holy grail product. I swear by it!
A toner is used after you cleanse and before you apply any other products like serum or moisturizer. Just use a cotton pad to swipe it over your face and neck.
Essential Sun Protection
In addition to my everyday moisturizer with SPF, I also have a few favorite products I am never without while at the pool or traveling. Supergoop! is a favorite brand for this. The Unseen Sunscreen is a fantastic product that’s SPF 40 and is technically a makeup primer. I just use it as a sunscreen while at the pool.
Another favorite and holy grail product I swear by is the Supergoop! Invincible Setting Powder. It’s an easy way to re-apply sunscreen over my makeup and even on my part. It’s saved my scalp from getting burnt on many occasions. Read my full review on this product here!
