I’ll never forget the first sunflower fields I ever saw. We were in Italy while my Dad and I were driving from Milan to Cinque Terre (fun fact, that’s where my family’s from!) and we kept driving past field after field. There were vast fields of gorgeous yellow sunflowers that just went on for what seemed like miles. Their cheerful faces just basking in the sun and turning with it throughout the day. It’s an incredible sight to see so many of those yellow flowers all standing perfectly upright and facing all in one direction like a yellow flower army. Truly incredible and gorgeous. I regret not stopping to snap photos. So when I learned about the sunflower farm just 25 minutes north of Atlanta, I considered visiting. And was thankfully pushed to go thanks to my friend Kristin who’s a sucker for a good photo opp.
We ended up putting this off which was dumb. There are only about 2 weeks that they’re in bloom. Turned out, we went the very last day they were open. The place was a zoo and half the flowers were either picked or starting to die. We did find some beautiful flowers though thankfully. And even a corgi whose parents took him for a full-blown photo shoot which was probably the highlight of the adventure. I’ll be honest though, don’t go here expecting to see acres of sunflowers. It was quite small and didn’t feel very grand, if you will. It still made for a fun Sunday morning and we got to take home some of these pretty flowers.
But none the less, sunflowers have been a favorite flower of mine. Affordable, cheerful and don’t smell. So fun fact about me is I hate the smell of most flowers and also highly allergic to the super stinky ones. If you send me flowers with lilies in them, they’re getting tossed immediately. Or gifted to my concierge. I’ve been known to pull them out of arrangements and gift them to friends or family who will give them a better home. They cannot be in my place, period. So I have a love for sunflowers for not only how pretty they are, but the fact they can be in my home and not bother my horrible sinuses. Glamorous, I know.
What’s your favorite flower? I’m now on the hunt to find a tulip field (or just taking a visit to Amsterdam during tulip season, casual), peonies and ranunculus. Maybe even dahlia’s, they’re just so colorful and come in a million varieties it seems. Now to head to Trader Joe’s to go buy more flowers to cheer up my home!
