Every spring and summer I end up grabbing a few new pairs of shorts. I’m a denim hoarder as you all know. So denim shorts are always top of mind. As I’ve not only gotten a little older, but also styles have changed, I’ve been on the hunt for LOTS of new shorts it seems.
Typically, shorts are a hard thing for me to find that work. I’ve got a booty and thighs and have always found it hard to fit my waist because of that. Shorts would be tight in the butt and thigh and then gape in the back at my waist.
I found some great shorts over the years mostly from BLANKNYC, J. Crew, AGOLDE and Madewell denim shorts to name a few. So here are my best summer shorts to shop from denim to linen and even pull-on comfy shorts.
When it comes to denim, even in shorts, I like to always look at the label to see what it’s made of. I like my jean shorts to have quite a bit of stretch usually (3-6%). But if you like the 100% cotton shorts, go for it!
There’s a pair included below that is 100% cotton that I actually love. They just take a little time to break in and should be a little snug at first since they will get broken in. Since they lack any stretch, they won’t “bounce back”.

The Best Summer Shorts
I’ve got a few favorite shorts in my closet and they’re always my go-to. I find myself reaching for shorts the most in the summer months instead of dresses. It’s my denim obsession I suppose! These are some of the best summer shorts to own for a well-rounded wardrobe.

The Best Denim Shorts
Madewell Perfect Vintage Denim Shorts
One of my most favorite shorts in my closet are my Madewell denim shorts. They come in a few styles and cuts. But the high rise fit and longer inseam are ideal. These are fantastic because they’re a slightly higher rise at 10 1/2″.
There are even a few with a 12″ rise. Plus, there are some inseam options based on your preferences. Whether you want to go short-ish in the inseam at 4″ or an extra inch with 5″ (I’m finding I prefer a longer inseam these days).
Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans are some of my favorite denim in my closet. So it’s no surprise that their shorts are also a great find. I find in their shorts I like to size up one size, when normally in their jeans I size down.
Other Favorite Denim Short Brands
A few other brands I’m loving for denim shorts include AGOLDE shorts and Everlane ones. They have really great options that aren’t super fitted and have a slight a-line flare to them.

Cotton Twill Shorts
Cotton twill shorts are a great substitute for denim shorts. They’re super comfy (hello, they’re cotton!) and usually come in tons of colors. I love the ones I have from LOFT. They feel polished and flattering. They come in several colors and even in a curvy fit. And they now have a 6 inch inseam option as well here.
Cotton twill or a chino, are just one of those super classic looks that you can find at many stores in various colors and inseams. I love these styled with an oversized linen button down, or an open knit sweater for cooler summer nights or evenings by the water. They’re great with sneakers or sandals, and can even be dressed up with heels and the right tops. I find them to be super versatile and a great alternative to denim shorts.

Linen Shorts
Linen shorts are a must have in my opinion. They’re the perfect shorts that feel cool and light during warm weather days. Linen is a breathable fabric that’s ideal for summer and it’s one of my top tips for choosing summer outfits. Plus, they also usually come in tons of colors as well.
Look for 100% cotton or 100% linen to ensure you’re wearing a truly breathable fabric. I love linen shorts to wear to the beach, or pair them with a matching linen button-down for a cute simple set. They’re also easy to style with a simple cotton tank and an oversized denim jacket for a complete look.

Pull On Shorts
Pull on shorts are a favorite for summer. They’re easy and comfortable. There are also so many styles to choose from in different fabrics. You can find cotton poplin, linen, denim and more. I love a pull on short because they just feel easy and kind of like pajamas! And so many of them are part of matching sets.
They are definitely a more casual vibe, but with the right styling, like tucking in your shirt, and adding a third piece, you can make them feel less like pjs and more like a complete thoughtful outfit.
Sweat Shorts And Soft Shorts
For a truly casual, relaxed vibe, go for sweat shorts or any type of soft shorts. My Lou & Grey sweat shorts are perfect for lazy days, yet still feel put together when you add an oversized denim jacket and tuck in a fitted tank.
A great pair of drawstring sweat shorts are just great for summer. I wear this type of short all spring and summer long. They’re just great to throw on to run to the store and not be in your pajamas.

Tailored And Trouser Style Shorts
Since trousers are having a big moment in fashion right now, it’s no surprise that it’s translating to shorts for summer. I love a more tailored or trouser style short for a truly elevated look. It feels much dressier than any other option.
Plus, it’s all about the styling. You can totally go more casual with this with a tee and easy sandals. But you can definitely dress up a short suit set for a bridal shower or baby shower for spring or summer with a heel and nicer top.
A-Line Denim Shorts
The newest addition to my closet for summer shorts, have been the a-line denim style. This silhouette feels like an updated mom jean short. It’s slightly a-line and flares out, allowing a bit of space between your thigh and the shorts. They are super flattering, and comfortable. They feel more polished and modern too. My favorites are from Everlane, but you can find a similar style at a few favorite retailers. Also look for relaxed mom jean short, it’ll provide a similar look.
Bermuda Shorts
Bermuda shorts are having a big moment lately and it’s a really fun trend to jump on if you need something new to style. I like a more looser fit, versus anything tight. I’d almost argue the above could be a bit looser and longer. For anyone who is on the shorter side, or has short legs, you’ll likely feel more stylish in a low heel to pair with them, versus a flat. Aim for a fitted top or one that’s at least tucked in to feel more polished.
Bermuda shorts also come in all sorts of styles from denim to trouser style. So you can find something to wear to the office, or to a picnic on the weekend. There are loads of options to try.
