It’s slowly starting to feel like spring in New York City, and so it’s time for dresses. I’m not yet bringing out the full on spring and summer dresses. The linen or the florals. But the dress I am reaching for is the perfect midi shirt dress from Everlane.

The Everlane Supima Shirt Dress
I have always been a fan of a good shirt dress. I think a shirt dress is super versatile in that you can really have some fun with styling them. From dressing them up, to dressing them down. Or making them more edgy or preppy. Whatever floats your boat.

I got this Everlane Supima cotton shirt dress and knew it needed my go-to spring layering tricks. With NYC spring feeling VERY different than that of Atlanta, I am learning that layering is truly key. While I’d probably wear this as is with no layers in Atlanta when it’s 72 and sunny, things are just different now with my NYC life. Such as, lower temps. A total drag, but I’m dealing with it.
To layer this shirt dress I just threw on an oversized trench coat. You can stop here if you want. But for a little added layer and texture, I also threw a cotton crew neck sweater over my shoulders.
I wonder if we’ll ever get sick of throwing a sweater over our shoulders. It’s a trend that I suppose has always been around, but it has for sure become a more trendy as of late, which is somehow just different. No more tying a shirt around your waist, just throw something over your shoulder. And we beg of you, no more shirts tied around your waist unless it’s an emergency.

I do wonder though.
Do we think we’ll look back at this trend and cringe like we did with our 2012 trends that needed a Millennial update for today? Will I be adding it to this Millennial style update post in the near future? Time will tell.
I can confidently say though I’m clearly all in on the trend. And I won’t be getting rid of it anytime soon. And it was the perfect layer for this outfit.

Evelrane Supima Cotton Short Sleeve Dress Sizing
I find that I mostly take my usual size in Everlane. For this dres, I took a size 4 and find it’s just roomy enough but not oversized. If you’re in-between you may want to size down. I also love the length of it.
I decided to unbutton a few buttons at the bottom. Which I always recommend doing for any dress, yes even the short ones. It adds a little movement to the dress that you otherwise just wouldn’t have if it was buttoned all the way down.
