If there’s one skirt style that’s trending for fall, it’s the maxi skirt. We’re seeing it as denim skirts and satin skirts the most. While I think I’ll be skipping a denim maxi (I’m partial to the denim midi skirt), the maxi satin slip skirt is 100% a trend I’m jumping on.
For years, many of us rocked the midi slip skirt. While still in style, this feels like a fresh update to it. And as always, some of the styling tricks we used in the 2010’s, are getting a bit of an update.
These updated styling tips also work with a satin slip midi skirt too. So here a few ways to style a satin maxi skirt for fall and winter.
Ways To Style A Satin Maxi Skirt
You can go one of a few ways here with a satin maxi. They can be dressed down casually with sneakers, cotton tees and even sweatshirts and denim jackets.
But you can even dress them up with heels, boots, and pretty blouses. While I’m more of the casual type, here are some ideas to to style those satin skirts.
Here are some of my favorite satin maxis so you can recreate these looks. These all can be a great base as we begin to style them up with today’s tips. And my reminder to you, you don’t have to buy a black one! Try champagne, brown, or even navy.
Casual Satin Maxi Skirt Outfit Tips
I think for a casual look it’s all about cotton tees to pair with your satin maxi slip skirts. Whether you go more fitted, cropped or oversized is really up to you. As you can see in some of the outfit ideas below, there are options!
Add a third piece to complete the look. A trick I always suggest especially when styling things casually to make them feel more intentional. I added this tan cashmere J.crew sweater over my shoulders to add more interest and texture to the look. It’s my lazy third piece trick.
Another option for a casual third piece is a bomber jacket, denim jacket or a lady jacket for a more preppy vibe.
Sneakers and sandals are perfect to wear with your long satin maxi skirt. Choose a sneaker that fits your style whether it’s a leather sneaker or Converse, or the super popular Adidas Sambas. I think a slightly sleeker shoe works better here versus an overly chunky one like a Dad sneaker.

Dressy Satin Maxi Skirt Outfit Tips
To dress up your silk slip maxi skirts, try wearing toppers like blazers or lady jackets. These feel really polished and will elevate the look.
When it comes to choosing tops and blouses, a cropped button-up would be a great pairing, or a beautiful knit sweater. I’d stay away from adding more silk unless it’s a matching set or in a contrasting color. Think an ivory silky top with a black, brown or navy slip skirt.
And for your shoes, go dressy with ballet flats, boots or heels. For warmer days, a strappy heel works great too.

Shoes To Wear With Satin Maxi Skirts
Sneakers
Pair your maxi satin skirt with a cool street style sneaker. A New Balance 550, or Adidas Sambas or Gazelle are the ideal on trend shoe. Any minimal leather or suede sneaker will work. I’d keep the super chunky dad sneakers in the closet for this one.
Flats
For a more polished and preppy look, try a flat like a ballet flat or mary jane. These work well for fall. And a great option if you’re heading into the office.
Sandals
For spring or early fall, try a sandal like a strappy slide or low heeled sandal.
Boots
Yes, you can wear a boot or bootie with your satin maxi slip skirts. These are a perfect pairing for fall and winter.
Maxi Satin Skirt Outfit Ideas
To get more inspired and see these tips in action, here are some of my favorite maxi satin skirt outfit ideas. From dressy, to casual, to edgy and simple, these are some of my favorite looks to recreate.
Dressed Up With A Blazer For Spring
A cool way to dress up your maxi slip skirt for spring is with a great blazer. This monochromatic look is great for going out to dinner with friends or date night. While her chunky sandal choice is casual and very on trend, you could easily swap for a high heel to be a bit more dressy.
Casual With An Oversized Boxy Tee
Similar to how I’ve styled mine, but this is just slightly longer. I think if you went any longer in the tee this may look too grungey or messy. It’s tricky! When in doubt, always show off the waist is my number one tip. But if you’re tall like this, sometimes it works!
Adding a boxy oversized tee really dresses down the satin maxi slip skirt quickly. I like that she’s styling this with a strappy sandal. Perfect for spring or early fall.
Add A Striped Sweater
Running to recreate this. I love the long-sleeved striped looser fitting top paired with a skirt for fall. For a shoe, you can do a sneaker if you want. @the_reflective styled it with a patent ballet flat for a more preppy look.
Casual For Fall With Sneakers And A Third Piece
The best way to style the satin maxi skirt for fall is with a simple sneaker and a third piece. Try a slightly oversized blazer over your favorite tee. Or a slightly oversized denim jacket.
And yes, as you can see on the right, a cute crew sock is a fun addition. Socks are always a good idea, here’s my guide to styling socks.
For the Office With Ballet Flats
To take your satin maxi to the office for business casual, or for a dinner out with friends or date night, try a sweet ballet flat and a nice blazer.
Try a t-shirt underneath this to balance it out. But if you need to be dressier, try a knit top for fall instead. This will feel really polished and lets you get even more use out of the satin maxi as it truly can go from 9-5 to the weekend.
