Around the holidays we tend to dive into all the fabulous holiday pieces for our closet. Sequins and velvet instantly come to mind. I don’t love the idea of buying pieces for one or two uses so I am always aiming to get more wears out of fun pieces that you may pick up around the holiday season.
So I feel like that always begs the question, can you wear velvet after the holidays? And what ways can you style velvet that doesn’t feel like you’re heading to a holiday party in the middle of January?
Ways To Wear Velvet After The Holidays
If you have a great velvet piece in your closet like a velvet blazer or skirt, or maybe a trouser or full on matching pantsuit, don’t put it away just yet. There are ways you can still wear these pieces in your day to day life. From a fun dinner out with friends, to business casual for the office, and honestly, casual lunches and beyond.
Dress It Down
The main thing I think that helps to instantly transform velvet, is to dress it down. From pairing it with a casual tee, graphic concert tee, sneakers or combat boots, and jeans. These are all pieces that will dress it down.
So instead of pairing velvet with silky pieces, or nicer tops, bottoms or toppers, you will instantly make it feel dressed down by reaching for more casual items. This is the simplest trick, and we’ll dive into the specifics below!
Break Up A Velvet Suit Set
Instead of wearing an entire head-to-toe velvet look like you may have to attend the holiday work party, break up the set. Pair your velvet skirt or pants with a leather jacket or structured blazer. Get more use out of the items and apply some of these other tips to really make it feel post-holiday season appropriate.
While I love today’s matching velvet suit set, I applied a lot of these tips to the outfit to dress it down. So pairing it together I think still works without it feeling super dressy.
Pair With Sneakers
To dress down your velvet pieces, try swapping a dressier shoe for a pair of sneakers. It’s a really great juxtaposition and leans into the ‘wrong shoe trend’ that helps to make looks feel more interesting. I’d go for something leather or suede for winter when it comes to choosing a sneaker.
Style With Edgy Pieces
Any velvet item will always feel a bit more feminine and dressy, so pairing it with edgier pieces can be a great way to balance it. A few things that would work are items like Dr Marten combat boots, moto jackets and so on.
Style With Masculine Pieces
Just like our previous tip of pairing it with edgy pieces, masculine pieces work too. These types of pairings could be a chunky loafer with velvet, oversized menswear blazer with trousers or velvet mini dresses as a few examples.
Just Add Denim
Velvet blazer? Add some straight leg jeans. Velvet trousers? Add a denim jacket or denim trench coat. Denim is one of those things that can truly make an outfit feel more casual and not so dressy. So lean into mixing in your denim with velvet pieces.
Add Lighter Fun Colors
For the holiday season we tend to lean into blacks, navy and the like. Darker shades just feel more dressy sometimes. So while you may have a black velvet blazer or pant, you can definitely make it work after the holiday season by pairing it with more lighter shades.
This will offset the dressier vibe and make things feel a bit more casual. Think camel, soft blues (denim!), creams and even fun colors like purple and pink. These make your more evening, dressy, black velvet pieces, feel a little more
I hope these tips help to inspire you to continue wearing those fabulous holiday velvet pieces well into the new year. There’s no reason to store them away just yet.
