Every year I like to look back at all the books I’ve read. Some years I knock out more than others. In 2024, I have found myself struggling to read. I am doom scrolling more than ever. But one thing I have been able to do more of, is listen to books. With more time on subways and walks, listening to audiobooks has been a great way for me to consume books these days. I’ve been using the Libby App to download audiobooks and it’s so easy and a free way to read your books.
I have several books on deck that I’ve started and hope to finish soon. I’ve been in such a bad reading rut and have started several books. Hoping to sit down and really dive into them. On deck is the final book in the American Royals series, Stanley Tucci’s new book “Taste” which I’ve started on audio and love, and lastly Sharon McMahon’s The Small And The Mighty. Here’s what I read in 2024.
What I Read In 2024
Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica
This thriller had me on the edge of my seat to know where these missing women were and who was responsible. The story takes place in a town where a local woman went missing on a jog, and then a few weeks later, a mother-daughter also disappeared. A really great thriller and mystery if you’re into that.
MY RATING ★★★★★
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
This book was highly recommended by my sister who claims it to be one of her all time favorite thrillers. A psychiatrist works with a patient who is well, silent, and tries to work with her to uncover her story and traumas. There are also unexpected twists that you just don’t see coming throughout the book.
MY RATING ★★★★★
Pineapple Street by Jenny Jackson
I don’t know if I can add this to my list or not, but I could not finish this book. It was highly recommended as it takes place in the neighboring area where I spent my months in Brooklyn. The streets and restaurants were all familiar so it was fun to read about familiar places. But the story of this upper brow family just living their life had me utterly bored. So I gave up about half way through.
MY RATING ★
None Of This Is True by Lisa Jewell
Alix, a podcaster meets a woman at a pub, Josie, with the same birthday as her that turns into a bit of a friendship. Before you know it, things take a turn and Josie’s life is so clearly a bit off. And as a podcaster, Alix can’t resist telling her story. People go missing, weird things happen, and yet I was left with more questions than ever after reading this book. I was intrigued for most of the book, but can’t stand how it ended.
MY RATING ★★★
Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone
I wanted to love this because it started out kind of interesting and different than most other thrillers I have read. But about half way through I was lost. In addition, I truly could not explain to you how it ended and who people were and what the plot was about.
MY RATING ★
Democracy In Retrograde by Emily Amick and Sami Sage
If you’ve felt helpless and hopeless when it comes to politics, this is the book to read. Less a book, and more of a workbook of sorts with quizzes to figure out your civic personality and what sort of ways you can get involved based on that.
I loved this book as it was a quick read, and also left me feeling empowered and motivated to do SOMETHING. If we want to see change in our country and in our everyday lives, we must get involved. And getting involved doesn’t have to feel like a chore, and that’s what this book does. It lays out how getting involved can mean finding a new hobby, making new friends, and doing all of that while making a difference in our world.
MY RATING ★★★★★
Magnolia Parks by Jessa Hastings
A socialite and the love of her life go back and forth with wanting to be together. Dating other people to make the other ones jealous and so on. From jet setting to Greece and extravagant parties, these two love bird London socialites take you through a toxic timeline of their relationship.
I personally could not stand this book as I don’t think I’m into young romance books. I wish I stopped reading it but sometimes it’s just hard to when you’re already so far into the book.
MY RATING ★★
What I Listend To In 2024
Be Ready When The Luck Happens by Ina Garten
I bought this book and started to read it, and quickly realized I wanted to hear her voice for real. I switched to audio by chapter 3 and so glad I did. As a fan of Ina Garten, I was so excited to read this book. Her life story to me was so fascinating with how she got started with her food speciality store to her life in Washington D.C.
MY RATING ★★★★★
One In A Millennial: On Friendship, Feelings, Fangirls and Fitting In by Kate Kennedy
This book was like a really fun walk down Millennial lane. I absolutely loved all the flashbacks I had to my childhood and adolescence. While I could not relate to the one or two chapters that were about religion, purity culture and the like, it was still fascinating to hear about these experiences. And made me truly wonder who in my high school was living that lifestyle.
I think this is a book you have to listen to. Kate’s voice and cadence is the way to go. A must read if you’re a female Millennial and also remember having a blow up chair in your bedroom.
MY RATING ★★★★★
Rich AF: The Winning Money Mindset That Will Change Your Life by Vivian Tu
I think this book should be mandatory reading for all 16 year olds. This is a no-bull-shit book on how to better understand money, finances, and investing. In addition, I love how Vivian walks you through the basics in an easy to understand way.
MY RATING ★★★★★
Dear Girls by Ali Wong
I just love Ali Wong’s humor and her standups are a favorite of mine. Her book was just as funny and glad I listened to it to hear all of her impressions of her family and her funny tone she uses in her jokes. This was a book written to her daughters about her life. I just loved it and found myself laughing out loud on multiple occasions.
MY RATING ★★★★★
I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jeanette McCurdy
Jeanette is a child star who had a complicated relationship with her mother. It was a fascinating memoir of a child actor and a rare look into the industry. The stories Jeanette shares of her mother had me stunned throughout the book.
MY RATING ★★★★
Counting The Cost by Jill Duggar
I used to love watching 19 Kids And Counting, the reality show of the Duggar family. It was one of those fascinating shows that I couldn’t look away. I always felt a bit weird about the situation and this book confirms all of that. Jill Duggar shares her story of being in this TLC hit family who aimed to create a picture perfect lifestyle in the eyes of God.
