How To Style Wide Jeans
There are some tips to keep in mind when styling wide leg jeans. From choosing the right wide leg jeans for your body type, to the denim washes, length and more. Once you choose your favorite pair of wide leg jeans, it all comes down to styling them to make the proportions feel right and to let your personal style shine through.

How To Choose The Right Wide Leg Jeans For You
A wide leg jean really is one of the most universally flattering silhouettes. It really comes down to how wide you want your jeans and length. There are some jeans that are way more wide than others. While you can go super wide starting at the hip, or fitted through the hip and then wide through the leg. Some that have a slight leg opening, versus super wide.
I think the best place to start that is truly the most universally flattering, is a high rise wide leg that is fitted through the hip, and then is wide through the leg. This is look 2 above which I think is easiest to style and can be worn in a cropped or full length. Choose whatever wash you want from dark washes to light washes, ecru or black.

Wide Leg Cropped Jeans vs. Wide Leg Full Length Jeans
Wid leg jeans can come in many lengths too depending on the style you’re looking to achieve. Today’s post is really mostly about full length and longer inseams. But you can definitely try a wide leg cropped jean, they’re some of my favorite pairs of jeans in my closet. These hit at or above the ankle showing off the shoe. This makes them really fun to style because you can wear so many shoe options. So many heels, loafers, flats and sneakers work with them. Along with very specific types of boots, more on which shoes to pair with wide leg jeans below.
Best Shoes To Pair With Wide Leg Jeans
For Full Length Wide Leg Jeans
→ Touching the ground or longer wide leg jeans pair great with…
- Sneaker – slim or platforms
- Ballet flats
- Loafers
- Heels and clogs
- Ankle boots
- Knee high boots
A longer length wide leg jean really does go with a TON since you are only really seeing the toe of the shoe. You may find some of yours look better with some shoes here, versus others, you’ll just have to play around a bit.
I find my chunky loafers feel too heavy with most of my wide leg jeans that are full length, but a slimmer more classic loafer can sometimes balance out the jeans well. A ballet flat or low heel are great. And you can really wear any type of bootie here if the boot is mostly covered unlike the cropped wide leg where more rules come into play. More ideas on the best shoes for wide leg pants here.
It’s all in your own personal style preference for what works here. And when it comes to heels or boots, I find an elongated toe box whether that be a square toe or pointed toe, works best when it peeps out from under the jeans. But that isn’t a hard rule, I still love a rounded toe, or open toed espadrille wedge here as well.
For Cropped Wide Leg Jeans
→ Hitting at or around the ankle, these wide leg cropped jeans pair great with…
- Sneaker – slim or platforms, high-top or low-top
- Ballet flats
- Loafers
- Heels andclogs
- Sock booties
- Chelsea boots
I have one firm rule when it comes to pairing shoes with my cropped wide leg jeans, and it’s that anything that covers your ankle like a bootie or sneaker, should be snug to the body and go high enough up on the leeg that the jean falls over it slightly. When it comes to which boots to wear with jeans, this guide will also help you navigate your options!
For example, high-top sneakers are great, and so are sock booties. If you’re styling Chelsea boots, you want them to be more snug and have a taller shaft on them. Other than that, any slim or platform sneaker, ballet flat or lafers, heels and clogs, you name it, really does work with all cropped wide leg jeans. They are super versatile. Best Tops & Jackets To Pair With Wide Leg Jeans
When styling wide leg jeans I have found that the tops and jackets are one of the biggest challenges for many people to overcome. I aim for a more fitted top or one that is at least tucked in if it has some volume to it. This helps to balance out the proportions of the more voluminous bottoms.
And the same goes for jackets. You want more structure typically or a shorter fit that hits at the hip. A shorter jacket with wide leg jean combination helps to provide a more flattering silhouette. Think bomber jackets, lady jackets or moto jackets that hit around the hip or higher. Wide leg jeans really elongate your legs. So cutting off your leg with the wrong length jacket can feel off balance. This rule is really loose though. It’s all about styling sometimes with fitted pieces underneath or exposing the neck or wrists to add balance.
Lastly, I love to reach for long line pieces too like a long structured blazer, or super long trench coat or wool coat for winter. The longer length helps to continue to elongate your body.

With all of these great outfit ideas from dressed up for date night, to casual everyday and even business casual for the office, there’s inspiration for every one here.
