One of the ways to truly fine-tune your personal style is to take a look at what you find yourself reaching for the most. Versus, what’s super on trend and what you need to buy. And what a capsule wardrobe collage may tell you to buy.
Don’t get me wrong, I think capsule wardrobes can help make getting dressed easier, shopping more efficient and affordable in the end, and allow you to let your personal style shine through. My disclaimer here is that not all capsule wardrobes are designed for everyone.
Not All Capsule Wardrobes Are Designed For Everyone
When I look at many capsule wardrobes I don’t see my personal style in them. And yes, I have capsule wardrobe guides here on the blog from my spring capsule, to a winter capsule guide, and my French capsule wardrobe. These are just a guide to what some of the essentials may be for seasons and destinations. They should be loosely followed in my opinion and can be a good jumping off point.
Where Should You Expand Your Closet
But it is up to you to kind of figure out your own and where you may want to expand on. And recently that had me thinking of expanding on things in my closet that I love and wear the most.
These are pieces that you clearly are loving and feel your best in. And they are pieces that work with your closet. And this is why I truly believe you should buy what you love, and invest in those pieces to give yourself even more options.
Leaning Into My Closet Favorites
Take today’s outfit for example. I find myself reaching for my first pair of black faux leather pants a lot. I love to wear them, have found many ways to style faux leather pants and feel really good in them. So it was time to start adding more options to my closet.
Sure this might be why I now have two dozen pairs of denim. But I like what I like! I also own zero winter dresses and cardigans. They aren’t for me. So when I see them on capsule guides, I skip over them. But I find myself reaching for my straight leg leather pants constantly. So it was time to add some new colors and shapes to the closet.
I love a slim straight leg silhouette, and I’ve been on a big brown kick. So I grabbed a few new colors and styles so instead of just having one pair, I now have options that allow me to make more outfits with my current closet.
And when you know these are things you really love, you can also shop for them during hte off season. I snagged two pairs of faux leather pants at GAP during a major spring sale. No one was buying them, obviously, it was time for warm weather and so they were on deep clearance. I knew there was no way that faux leather pants were going to be out, they had just come in!
So I grabbed myself two pairs and saved a ton of money. And guess what? They’re now back on GAP’s website at full price for fall and winter. A win on my end! It’s situations like this that you really are proud of yourself for the foresight and your future stylish self with thank you.
Figure Out Your Personal Style
It’s important to start to figure out your personal style, and here are some of my tips for doing that. But one of my general rule of thumbs, is that if you find yourself reaching for something a ton, it may be time to try it in a fresh color, print or fabric or a freshly updated silhouette to keep things interesting.
And yes, sometimes it is nice to have a backup pair of something. I do that a lot with white tees and denim because I do wear them that much. But try to branch out and find same but different, to really carry your personal style through your closet even more.
